Randy's Story

Life Well kids we are definitely living in a much different world than the one we lived in in 1979. Heck the worst things we had to worry about back then were long gas lines and when that dang disco nonsense would go away for good. When I think back on high school, the thing I probably miss the most is the social aspects; hanging out with friends, the weekend parties on the golf course, and the freedom of it all. As far as the academic part of high school, the opening line to Paul Simon's Kodachrome "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can even think at all" sums it up well for me. So much time was spent learning useless information that would have little or no impact on my life later on. Probably the most useful information I can think of using now came from an auto theory class where we learned practical stuff about cars. After graduation I still was unsure what I wanted to do career-wise. I attended DVC that fall and found that it was alot like high school except with a much bigger parking problem. Initially I majored in Administration of Justice with the intention of pursuing a career in law enforcement. I enjoyed the classes and found them to be extremely interesting however I discovered that in reality I didn't have the cop mentality so I changed majors to Business/Real Estate. While going to DVC I worked part time as a clerk with Safeway Stores. I graduated DVC in 1984 with an Associate in Arts Degree, a virtually worthless degree in today's high tech workplace. In 1983 my entrepeneurial spirit kicked into action and I sunk my life savings into a mailbox rental business (similar to Mailboxes Etc.) in Walnut Creek. As it turned out this business was much more fun to plan than it ever was to operate. I lasted about a year and a half before boredom set it and I sold it to one of my regular customers. In 1985 I entered the construction industry as an apprentice flooring installer. Flooring wasn't my first choice of jobs but I needed a job and that's the one I found. The work was hard but the pay was good so I stuck with it. Unfortunately I never liked being a flooring installer but couldn't replace the pay with anything else at the time so I stuck it out. The recession of 1991 eliminated my job as the company I worked for suddenly downsized it's staff in dealing with the slowing economy. In 1991 I decided to enter real estate sales and got my sales license that year. It was a horrible time to go into real estate as the recession got worse and house sales were slowing down considerably. I did pretty well considering the market conditions but living commission check...Expand for more
to commission check was a real challenge and I eventually had to find a more stable form of income. During my real estate sales I couldn't help but notice the terrific opportunity that fixer upper properties offered investment-wise. At the time most fixer-upper properties went unsold because the average buyer didn't want to buy something that needed work. This shortsightedness left a wide open opportunity for someone with a little imagination. I started off slow and once the economy started to turn around in 1997 I went into it full time. To date (1/06) I have bought, fixed up, and resold 17 houses. The last 3 homes I have worked on have been in Walnut Creek. Who would have thought that these houses would get so expensive! Personal stats: I am still single after all these years. Almost got married about 15 years ago to my longtime love, but things didn't work out for us and we eventually drifted apart. I have dated on and off, did the single's scene nonsense, but discovered the older I get the more picky I am about what I want. One thing about being in your 40's, you pretty much know what interests you and what doesn't. Anyways, I've lost touch with most of you over the years, but if you want to contact me, even if it's only to say hello, I would love to hear from you! School Thinking back on high school I mostly remember the fun my friends and I had. The times were loose and emphasis on school back then wasn't anything like it is for today's kids. You went to class, studied just enough to pass the tests, and spent the rest of the time goofing off. I can't remember anyone worrying about college, SAT scores, or future career goals. We were just living in and for the moment. Things are definitely different now. An interesting side note to anyone who went to Northgate: In 1987 a movie called "The Principal" was filmed at the school. It stars James Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr. The first 15 minutes or so of this film was done at NGHS and there is alot of interior and some exterior footage. It's a B-movie at best, but it is entertaining to see our old high school up on the silver screen. College After high school it was off to that bastion of education on the hill, DVC, also known as Tinker Toy Tech, Harvard on the Hill, The University of Pleasant Hill (UOPH). There was nothing remarkable about my education at DVC other than it was free except for textbooks. I had received invitations from UC Davis and Hayward to attend apparently from my SAT scores, but I opted to do the community college things instead. I don't know if college has had any impact on what I do today, probably as much as high school did.
