Randy's Story

I retired from teaching math in public schools after 29 years (27 in Colorado Springs) in May of 2004 and was blessed to be able to begin teaching at a day/boarding school also in Colorado Springs. My wife, Marsha, and I live on campus and are houseparents to 15 boys. We coach both boys and girls tennis together. I also coach basketball. In the public school, I was the head baseball and head softball coach for quite a few years but this school, Fountain Valley School of Colorado, does not presently have those sports. I really enjoy still being able to work with high school students. I get to teach my favorite class which is Algebra III with Trigonometry. Being at a boarding school allows us to get to know the students better. They almost are replacements for our grown kids. Our students come from 16 different countries and over half of the states in the U.S. so they are quite diverse. Our daughter still lives with us. She was diagnosed with Aspbergers when she was in her early 20s and has been learning to deal with it. She is studying to become an accountant. Our son is finishing his first year of medical school at St. Louis University. He was born in Australia while I was an exchange teacher. He has had his parents interest in sports all of his life. He played tennis, basketball, and baseball in high school and baseball in college. He is engaged to a lovely young lady and their wedding will be this coming June. We enjoy travelling. Not coaching baseball and softball teams all summer has allowed us to do much more travelling. Since teaching at FVS, we have been to Europe (able to go to Wimbledon), Alaska, Guatamola, Yellowstone N.P., Glacier N.P., Grand Tetons N.P., and Waterton Lakes Provincial Park and we are heading to China this summer. For some ancient information: I attended the University of Arkansas on a baseball scholarship. I began studying architecture but the drawing classes and baseball practices were at the same time so I switched to math education. I made that decision because I remembered helping a few friends with chemistry around the kitchen table in high school and enjoying that but I liked math better than science so I chose to teach math. I taught in Arkansas for 2 years before moving to Colorado ( I have this thing for mountains). I coached football, basketball and baseball for the first few years but after marrying Marsha, I cut back to just one coaching job which was as head baseball. Our daughter, Stephanie, was born in 1981. In 1985, I took part in an exchange teacher program and taught in Wangaratta, Victoria located about 150 miles north of Melbourne. Our son, Daniel, was born while we were there. The exchange was a great experience. We often thought of moving back to raise our kids. We went back to Australia in 1994 on teacher exchange again so our son could get to know the country he was born in. I taught in Bourke, NSW which is located in the outback about 500 miles north and west of Sydney. It was quite an experience having taught 11 classes, some two differen...Expand for more
t classes at a time. When I returned, I went back to coaching fastpitch softball and then was asked to help out with girls tennis. Later, when our son was approaching high school age, they asked me to coach baseball again. The plan was I would coach him as he went from freshmen ball to JV to varsity. I followed the schedule but he went to varsity his sophomore year. That really worked out well so it didn't look like he was playing because his father was the coach. The next year I took over as the varsity coach and the team had a great year ending up ranked 10th in the state. Two players that I had coached ended up going to the college that Dan was attending during his senior year. On parents' weekend I had a blast watching the pitcher I'd coached pick up his 4th save of the week, and another player I had coached hit 3 homeruns, his only homeruns of the season. Dan also hit a couple of homeruns, one was a grand slam! I've never made it back for any of the class reunions because of other obligations. Since I'm not coaching in the summers anymore, I'm lookng forward to that opportunity. I'm also looking forward to hearing from former classmates, teammates, and friends from church. Updating this in February 2012 -- Marsha and I are still living on campus. Our son is graduating from St. Louis University's Medical School in May and will find out where he and his wife will be headed for his residency program. Our daughter will be graduating this summer with an accounting degree. We have enjoyed the last few summers travelling. We took a 2 week trip to China a few summers ago and then went to Scandinavia and northern Europe last summer. I never imagined when growing up that I would ever visit China, Russia or East Germany. How blessed we have been. Updating now in July of 2015 - I retired from teaching and coaching in June. Marsha and I helped move our son's family of 2 girls and his wonderful wife back for a year's sports medicine fellowship in Worcester, Massachusetts. We returned to school to pack up and head out in our motorhome. We left July 1 and have begun our projected year + trip around North America. Our daughter has found work and is still living in Colorado Springs with plenty of aunts and uncles and cousins around. We are enjoying seeing places without having to rush away before we really want to. Looking forward to seeing the U.S. Open in New York this fall. We have always been teaching and coaching before. Updating October 2017 I have been tutoring math a couple of nights a week during the last 2 school years. It is still fun to watch students gain confidence in math. I still play tennis competitively. Our 55+ team reached the state tournament this summer. I started playing softball again last spring in a 60+ league. It was fun to play again! Marsha and I went to Australia and New Zealand for 46 days. It was great visiting friends and seeing how much things have changed since my exchange teaching years in 1985 and 1994. We also visited places we hadn't been able see before.
