Randy's Story

I left Joplin right after high school, went off to do some military training, then attended and graduated from kemper Military College, in Boonville, MO. This also got me my commission as a Second Lieutenant, but I still had to finish my college before I could go on active duty, which I did, earning a BS in Biology from the Univ. of Tennessee. After a brief haitus working in the hazardous waste engineering field in Houston, I went on active duty in 1988. I was "branched" in the Signal Corp in the Army, which means I was to be a communicaitons offficer. I trained for 6 months in Fort Gordon, GA before my first duty assignment in Camp Casey, Korea as a Battalion Signal Officer for a Field Artillery Battalion for a year. I returned to the U.S. to be stationed at Ft. Benning, GA for the next 4 years, also in Battalion Signal Officer positions and serving in Desert Storn/Desert Shield during this time where I was also promoted to Captain. I then attended my Advance Signal Officers course, another lovely 6 month in Ft Gordon, GA, before getting a position as a Company Commander running a large satellite communications complex at Ft. Meade, MD for two years. Then off to my favorite assignment of my career, with my new wife, Peggy, two years working in NATO at Naples, Italy. I got to travel all over Europe, including a 6 month tour in Sarejevo, rebuilding that country's war torn infrastructure. I was also promoted to Major while in Italy. I returned to the U.S. to my last assignment, two years at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuqueque, NM, where I also got divorced. I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma while in NM and was medically retire...Expand for more
d for that in 2000. Since then my life has been a haze of boozing, whoring and drugs. Just kidding. I came back to the Joplin area for about 3 years, living in Carthage and Pittsburg. I pursued various business opportunities, prefering to remain self-employed. The two most significant are photography and eBay sales of antique photography. I then got to accomplish one of my life long dreams and drove around the country in an RV for a year. I visited 36 states, touching almost all four corners of the U.S., just misssing CA by a state both to the north and east. I got to see many National Parks and Forests, mostly avoiding interstates and RV parks, prefering the back roads and wilderness areas. One of the little known perks of being a disabled vet is having lifetime free admission to all National Parks. Let me just take a moment to say "nyaaa nyaaa nyu nyaaa nyaaa" During that trip, I also got deeply involved with a hobby I hope to turn into my livelihood someday; stereophotography or 3D photography. I took about 170 rolls of film in 3D on that trip and attended the national 3D conventin that year in Portland, OR. I recently got to attend my second one in Boise, ID. After that trip, I settled in the Denver area briefly before moving with my new daughter and her mom to Washington state. We lived there for about a year together, then I moved out and was there for about another year on my own. I moved back to the Joplin area around the beginning of 2008, because my daughter was moved here and I wanted to be near her. I plan to pursue my photography here, with some interesting projects that I will update here when/if they come to fruition.
