Ray's Story

To start with I did 20 1/2 years in Uncle Sam's Flying Circus handling anything that goes BOOM and even getting to blow some of it up myself while seeing the world on the governments (actually your) dime. I spent almost 8 years in Germany during 2 separate tours where my two oldest kids and a couple of grand kids still are. I spent almost a year in Saudi Arabia during 3 different tours, and 2 years in Korea where I retired from in 1999. WHAT A BLAST! I currently drive for a small trucking company in Thomasville hauling furniture out and anything they can find for me to come home with. You have to love hauling 26,000 pounds of marshmallows back from Chicago to a Nestle warehouse in Danville, Virginia one week before Christmas. I love the folks I work for and being on the road is almost better than being at home, but, like being stationed overseas you loose touch with anyone back home. One old boy at a place I go to in Ohio all the time asked last week if I had ever attended a reunion at one of my old squadrons? I told him I had only had the chance to attend one reunion for my High School and that was years ago. I...Expand for more
looked up a couple of my old units that night. I saw the names of some old friends and a couple of guys I butted heads with on way too many occasions who did well. It felt good to know they were all still out there and I started wondering about you guys so here I am. Well, we have all made it this far in spite of our aches and pains so to see something posted on each other should give us at least a small warm fuzzy feeling, as we used to say. Just for the record, you all knew me as Raymie. That was the nickname the family gave me to distinguish me from Grandpa Black for whom I was named after. The first morning in basic training the kid two bunks up from me had a similar "kiddie" name and the TI's grilled him mercilessly for 5 minutes over it. By the time they got to me I was Ray and thank goodness SSGt Scoggin did not look closely at the first name on my drivers license but instead focused on how long my hair was and demanded to know if that was a picture of me or my sister. Look who is back together after all these years! Laurie and I got back together because of Classmates. We got married on 26Sep20.
