Ray's Story

What's my story? After ITHS I studied engineering at Yale, and graduated in 1972. I was on the Yale wrestling team for 2 years and also did intramural soccer, ice hockey, and crew. After graduation I worked as an engineer in Pittsburgh and northern Connecticut for 5 years designing systems that controlled steam turbines and nuclear power plants. During that time I went to school nights (mostly) and got a masters degree in electrical engineering. Around the time of Three-Mile Island, I saw the handwriting on the wall for nuclear energy, and decided to go back to school for an MBA. I spent two years in the Boston area going to business school, met my wife Jeanne (before school) and we got married after I was finished. We moved to Oregon where I worked for Intel for almost 4 years and Jeanne sold computers. It was an exciting time to be in the "chip" industry, and I was completely fascinated by the technology - so I decided to leave the marketing side and went into the factory to make them. For two years I was one of the guys who dressed up in a white suit with hood, face mask, goggles, gloves and boots. I made the tiny integrated circuits that were going i...Expand for more
nto IBM PCs at the time. Somehow we find time to have twin boys. We really enjoyed Oregon. It was beautiful with mountains and rivers. We witnessed the explosion of Mt. St. Helens, from a safe distance, and got to shovel volcanic ash off the driveway. Some of my fondest memories of Oregon are of camping and hiking in the Columbia River gorge, and cross country skiing on Mt. Hood. In 1983 we left the Portland area and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where we've been ever since - much to my surprise. Our daughter was born in Cleveland, and my sons grew up there. I ended up working in venture capital and as a stock analyst for the past 13 years. I never expected to be doing investing for a living - who knew? All of our kids are through college now and are trying to make their ways in the world. Jeanne and I are starting to think in terms of what next? I'd like to get a small sailboat and take advantage of this great big lake we have next to us (Lake Erie). I've been fortunate to stay in touch with a lot of my friends from ITHS and college. Every year I try to do some hiking out west and indulge my interests in fossil hunting and archeology. Life has been good!
