Ray's Story
Life
After Shades Valley High School: Birmingham Southern College (BA in German). Spent a year in Heidelberg, Germany and a year in Vienna, Austria. MA in German from theUniversity of North Carolina. Taught German for a while. Conscientious Objector during the Vietnam war: worked with emotionally disturbed kids in New Hampshire. Went back to school and got a degree in Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Practiced as a Naturopath and Homeopathic doctor for 15 years. Married someone from Oregon and settled down here. Divorced 20 years ago, but still have a good relationship with my ex-wife. Have two boys, Nick 26, engaged, and Andrew 23 at the University of Hawaii. Currently work for Portland Community College in Portland as a Career Advisor. Happy with life. Don't mind being single. Love my boys. Have good friends. Hike every day.
The best teachers I had at Shades Valley were math teachers, even though that's not my strong subject. Of course, I ...Expand for more
loved singing in the choir (my favorite activity)and the ensemble. I don't think I learned much in high school (academically)and wasn't much inspired by the teachers. At Birmingham-Southern College, however, I had a lot of good teachers who challened my thinking and provided a generally good education. I had the priviledge of spending two years in Europe studying, which was wonderful (many stories and fond memories). Graduate school was a bust. Famous professors who couldn't teach, but U of North Carolina in the 60's was a cool place to be. Did things I wouldn't want to talk about here, but I've settled down now :)
Workplace
Some of my work biography is included in my life biography. I have been working for Portland Community Collge for 11 years in a program called Steps To Success. I help people on public assistance find employment. For 15 years, I practiced as a Naturopathic physician, specializing in homeopathy, counseling and physical medicine
