Ray's Story
After LHS, I attended Dartmouth College (AB, economics, 1970) and UC Berkeley (master of public policy, 1978). I went on to specialize in California public education policy and finance, directing the K-12 education section of the Legislative Analyst's Office for seven years and serving as assistant secretary of education for two governors. I also developed the first funding formula for charter schools, co-authored four monographs for the Public Policy Institute of California, and was a fiscal analyst for the community colleges chancellor's office and a school district CBO. I retired in December 2014 with 35 years of public service.
I enjoy international travel and have visited Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, England, Wales, France, Italy, Singapore, Borneo, New Zealand, Australia, and Tasm...Expand for more
ania. My hobbies include photography, growing carnivorous plants, and maintaining a classic 2005 Jaguar XKR coupe. I also enjoy walks on the beach with our 11-year old bichon frisé Oscar.
I married Cathy Genetti, a graduate of UC Santa Cruz, in 1987. Cathy is a former elementary school teacher and scientific illustrator who had a business designing interpretive signs for parks and trails. We have two sons, Michael (33) and Jeremy (31), who are both gifted singers. Michael received his bachelor's degree with highest distinction from UC Berkeley in 2013, majoring in mathematics; he works for Google in S.F., plays oboe with the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, and is proficient in Japanese. Jeremy received his bachelor's degree in molecular environmental biology from UC Berkeley in 2020; he plays guitar and bluegrass banjo.
