Raymond's Story

Spent 38 years working for United. Started September 1965. Drafted February 1966. Returned to United April 1968. Worked at O'Hare through 1984.; Elk Grove Village at HQ in 1985; then 18 years in the Washington DC/Baltimore area. In those 38 years, I was a Supervisor for 14 then a manager of various departments/locations for 18 years. The list of international cities I've visited includes Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and Dublin. My dad was born in Dublin. I first attended University of Illinois Chicago campus at Navy Pier. I was not ready for college. I took a train to Chicago (Irving Park and Cicero) every Sunday night. Stayed with my grandfather. Took a bus - Addison Street to Milwaukee Avenue to Grand Avenue - to get to school 4 days/week. Hour and a half trip to/from school. I quit school and went work at Rouse's (January 1965) driving a tow truck 10:00pm to 6:00am. I'm surprised I didn't meet some of you.....LOL..... hired by United September 1965. I was offered a job as a Supervisor with United in June 1972. I I then attended CLC for 6 years (1972 - 1978). I regret never getting my Bachelors' Degree. I do have an AAS in Industrial Supervision and an AAS in Mid-Management. Never saw many of my classmates after graduation because of my work hours - 2 pm to 10:30 pm at O'Hare and my move to Virginia. (a great state for travel and sight seeing). Married to my wife - Deborah - for 40 years. We met at United in Chicago in 1981. She is awesome. That's is her in the pic. We were at a family wedding in Nashville TN. I have 3 children - 1 in Virginia, 1 in California, 1 in Georgia - 10 grand children (8 boys, 2 girls) and 3 great grandchildren (2 boys, 1 girl). They live in Georgia - Savannah; Virginia - Culpeper and Leesburg; Colorado - Frederick'; Arizona - Scottsdale; California - Danville and Walnut Creek. All my brothers (3) and sisters (2) and most of my nieces/nephews still live in northern Illinois from Mundelein to Wauconda to Round Lake to Volo to Hundley to Mokena to downtown Chicago. Miss them all . I do have one niece in Atlanta, GA. My broth...Expand for more
ers and I played softball - sponsored by Emil's - for a lot of years in Ivanhoe. I also played when I moved to Virginia. I did play racquetball (mornings) when I worked at United and again when I lived in Virginia. I lived near a 45 mile bike trail that ran from Arlington VA to Leesburg VA. For several years I rode 10 miles X 3 days/week. it was an old commuter train right of way that was paved and had amenities added to it. It was really a nice ride. I lived in Herndon, VA near Dulles Airport. Great little town. From the 1st Friday in May until the last Friday in August the town held concerts on the "town green". We met all the our children with their children and attended the concerts for several years. Had a co-worker who was in a four-some with Redskins tickets. I was always able to get one of them to sell me their ticket when the Bears came to town. One of my pics shows him - Rick - and myself at a game. Since I moved to Georgia, my brother Matt and I have traveled to see the Bears in Miami X2, Tampa, Jacksonville, Atlanta X4 and Washington DC X3. I come to Chicago every other year when my brothers gets some FREE tickets. I moved to Georgia in 2004. My wife was born in Alabama and raised in Augusta GA. She left when she was 19 (1968). I was in Chicago with my family until 1986 so we came to Georgia so she could be with her family. Besides, we had flying with privileges with United and I had a Delta SkyMiles AMEX card so it was easy to get back home. We made regular trips. Some of the places we met with family were Hitz Sports Bar, Emil's', Elle's Pancake House, Crossroads for Sunday breakfast (hey Jack!), Tina G's, Park Street and a number of places in Wauconda because that's where we stayed with my brother. I was asked to return to Virginia - Dulles Airport - after retirement for 7 months in 2005. Then in 2006 I started working as a Superintendent for a home builder. Worked for him for 9 years. I figured, at age 69, it was time to quit working. I won't bore you with the medical issues I've encountered since 2021. I just hope 2024 is UNEVENTFUL !
