Raymond's Story

"Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it's been"...Those words from Grateful Dead's 1970 song Truckin' pretty well sum it up...Or as the Beatles once said, "it's getting better" (but John Lennon added right after: "it couldn't get much worse"...) I started off what seems eons ago doing the 1970 Kalani High School "All-Time Favorite Tunes" Top 100 Song Survey (the Top 25 is listed in the 1970 Yearbook, page 27), then went off to teach at LCC...then started a record-&-memorabilia mail-order company, added to that a financially dreadful bakery GOLDEN MEMORIES COOKIES at 870 Kapahulu Avenue, and guess what...I went back to tutoring and eventually got my teaching degree and taught culturally disadvantaged kids at Farrington High School's A.L.C. program with Tony Ah Yat as well as test-prep (SAT) at Saint Louis School. Fast forward 35 years, and I'm still teaching SAT test-prep at schools including Kalani High School, Moanalua High School, HBA (for 35 years) and Saint Louis (where my SAT program started in collaboration with Cal Lee). I've had programs in almost every high school on Oahu as well as on Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai an...Expand for more
d Lanai--even a student from Niihau! But my favorite gig is currently with Ke Kula Kamakau (Hawaiian immersion school)...but the road never ends--I've been writing books over the years...test-prep books, vocabulary-building books...and yes, rock-&-roll music-trivia books (hint: Presley Love--catchy name, huh?!)......You can take the rock out of the roll but you can't stop the ball rollin'...It's still in the blood...We're all movin' on down the line, but it's never too late to be Groovin' to memories that only we remember, a time when there was A Place In the Sun, when everything was Fun Fun Fun, and when we said Time Won't Let Me, knowing all the while that Time Is On My Side...I think I'm goin' back, but I'm not going there alone, for I Will Always Think About You even if I live without you, and with inspirations like L.K. and T.H. blazing the skies of 1970, I know I'll Remember You long after this lonely summer has gone...You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, but then again, in the Age of Aquarius, we couldn't have asked for anything less...Rock on, mighty Falcons of Kalani High School, "all praise to thee!" And keep those memories alive, P.H.!
