Raymond's Story
Life
After graduating from CD high, I spent some time learning about life, including Air Force service, and finally decided to go to college at age 24. I graduated with a double major in Finance and Accounting (with distinction) from Temple University and was immediately hired by Coopers & Lybrand. I got my CPA in 1976 and went to Campbell Soup Company in 1981. In 1985 I was promoted to Vice President Corporate Controller and in 1988 was made a General Manager of LeMenu Frozen Foods. In 1991, I went to West Pharmaceutical Services as Senior Vice President and CFO then to Genencor International in Palo Alto, California as CFO. After taking them public in 2000, they were sold in 2005. I recently retired as Senior VP and CFO of Clarient, Inc. in Aliso Viejo, CA. We are now living in Satellite Beach, Florida
My start in life was less than stellar, like many in Olney, with little encouragement and less wealth. Joe Queenan, a 1968 CD graduate, captured the essence of our early years with his depiction of his life in Olney and at Cardinal Dougherty in the book "Closing Time" which was recently published. Chapter 8 is particularly worth reading for a Cardinal Dougherty graduate.
I started 1st grade at age 5 and I was mentally and physically a year or two behind everyone else so my school years were made much more difficult than necessary.
All in all, however, those years in Olney made me stronger a...Expand for more
nd I wouldn't change them if I could. Still have friends from the neighborhood that I met when I was 11 years old and we laugh till we cry when we reminisce about The Trolley Barn, Sturgis Playground, buying $29 cars at Reedman's ("as is"), hanging on the corner and "going steady". I stay current with Philly happenings by belonging to a number of Philly oriented Facebook websites. With MLB.TV and NFL. Com streaming services, we are able to watch most of the Philly or Eagle games. Stopped watching the Flyers after they took Kate Smith's statue down and stopped watching the 76ers many years ago.
In June 2022, I retired from my last Board seat (had been on three boards, two of them publicly traded companies, and was Chair of one and Audit Chair on all three). Last one was in Boston, so I had to fly from Orlando to Boston four times a year and it became an exhausting trip so I'm glad it's behind me. Although I wake up every morning at 6:30 a.m., I now just turn over and relish just lying there thinking about the horrible commutes in my past. The worst commute was when I lived in Yardley, Penna. and had to drive to Wayne, Penna. over the Pennsylvania Turnpike raceway.
We still vacation in Avalon, New Jersey for the months of August and September but live in Florida the rest of the year. Still can't get over seeing flowers blooming in December and January.
Time for my afternoon nap,
