Rebecca's Story
I began taking classes at the University of California, Berkeley, during my Junior year at AHS, after being selected as a participant in the Professional Development Program on campus. So I continued my education at CAL upon graduation, kept up my Hula and Tahitian dance, and started to play Water Polo. I won a Tahitian Dance title, Miss Ori Tahiti, and two Hula Dance Titles, Miss Hula-Las Vegas, and Miss Hula-San Francisco. My sister, Gina, and I spent a winter holiday traveling in Ireland and Italy, and it was in Dublin, Ireland, where I first laid eyes on my husband, Andrew -- my handsome Irishman! Andrew and I remained in contact after that winter holiday, but it wasn't until Andrew moved to San Francisco in 1990 that we went on our first real date. We've been together ever since: we married in San Francisco in 1996, and our first daughter, Catherine, was born in 1998. al training, and taught swim lessons. Our second daughter, Hannah, was born in Dublin in 2003. My husband is a 6'5" former rugby player, so although you'd never guess it by looking at them now, Catherine was over 11 lbs. at birth, and Hannah was 10 lbs. 10 oz., despite being born a week early!
We've since returned to Alameda, which I appreciate so much more, now that I have children of my own. My daughters now carry on my interests: Catherine swims for Alameda Island Aquatics (she will be swimming the maximum allowed 7 events in the Junior Olympics), and both of our daughters dance/study at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts. Catherine just competed in her first hula competition, and the Academy's keikis took first place, with 2nd and 3rd place going to two excellent groups from Hawai'i... so it was a pretty big deal, not to mention an emotional occasion for me. My husband and daughters are my world, and are even better than I ever dreamed they would be!
