Rebecca's Story

If you read my story, please also share yours! After graduating from EGHS, I attended Sacramento State College, graduating with double major in Journalism and Social Science ( concentration in Sociology). Wanted to have different options for jobs. After college, took a great 2 month tour of Europe, touring 13 countries, including some of the communist countries. Going through East Berlin and seeing the Berlin wall at that time, was so very sad for the people who were imprisoned by it. First job was with KPOP Radio as a special promotions director. It was like working at WKRP (If you ever watched the show in the '70's). a lot of fun and opportunity to do a variety of things. some news reporting and interviews with locals and a few interesting politicians. A former college friend worked for SMUD as a programmer, and encouraged me to take a test for a computer programming job. With no background in computers, I took the test on a lark......the salary was very tempting....and to my great surprise they offered me a job in Spring 1974. I married in September 1973, and in 1979 we purchased 5 acres of oak trees and granite rocks (and lots of poison oak!) in Granite Bay and built our home where we still reside today. In May 1982, when our son was born, I began to work part-time to spend time with our baby. In March 1986 our daughter was born. I continued working part-time until 1991, then resigned in order to be home with children. For about 4 years while at home, I volunteered at school and scouts, softball, soccer, a variety of things....yes even the PTA Prez.....all great experiences and great time with my children. About 1995, as my children were older and arriving home later in the day, I started working for a private software company for 6 hours a day, eventually working full-time as a private contractor in my own little company, working for various state agencies. For about 6 years I worked for the CA Office of Emergency Services (OES). It was extremely rewarding and interesting working on the disaster response/assistance software programs, especially when OES was activated during times of terrible floods, fires, etc. As year 2000 approached, Governor Davis volunteered OES to track worldwide anomalies when midnight year 2000 hit. So my business part...Expand for more
ner and I prepared a program to do so. He monitored it the first 12 hours, and I the last 12 hours. Fortunately, all went smoothly, but no partying for me when the new millennium hit. During this OES years my son, mother and I took a tour of the major cities in Europe, and again later with my daughter to give her the same opportunity for see Europe. Travel is my favorite thing to do, so as a family we made other trips to Hawaii, and various states. Last summer I toured Ireland and Scotland, prompted partly by a desire to see my daughter who was working on an archaeological dig outside of Dublin for school credit. She then did some underwater exploration off the Spanish island of Menorca for credit as well.. Hope I can continue to see many other parts of the world. As the CA State budget began facing big problems, for greater stability, i took a job with CA Office of Public School Construction in 2005, where I am still working today. Our daughter is now married (putting on the wedding was fun!) and she and husband are graduating from UC Santa Cruz in June. Our son graduated from CSU Chico one week after the wedding (a very busy, but happy time!) and is now working for a software firm nearby. We have stayed active in our church over the years. While every life has it's ups and downs, I feel very blessed for God's care of me and mine. Favorite scripture verses are John 3:16 and Ephesians 2: 8 & 9. God's love is available in a simple way, for all who will simply believe in Him. Not a believer? Try, "A Case for Christ" and "Evidence that Demands a Verdict." The Institute for Creation Research another great source. My father, a huge influence on me of integrity, love and compassion (and fun!), passed away in 1986. My mother will be 92 year old on 8/2/2012,. She has been a great help over the years with my family and myself. My brother John has a small ranch in Newcastle and with his wife, is enjoying raising a teenage daughter. He is a retired teacher. I have really enjoyed seeing and hearing from so many of you.....but due to death dearly miss my oldest friend Judy Barmby.....also Bedford Smotherman....and recently Kevin McClanahan.....along with all too many others. Please stay well and safe, and drop me a note with update on your life! - Becky
