Rebecca's Story
Wnen I got a chance to work at the Grand Canyon my sophomre year of college, I was hooked on the open star-filled sky and fresh air of Arizona. I worked three summers before I went back for good after I graduated from Baylor in December 1978. I worked almost 2 years there before getting my first teaching job in 1980. There I met the love of my life and we married and had two kids. We moved to the Phoenix area in 1990ish and have been here ever since. We are both teachers so we have flexible schedules and time off in the summers to escape the heat as often as possible. Our kids are grown now, so we have time to do pretty much whatever we want. I try to hike at least onece a week so I can continue to take ladies' groups to the bottom of the canyon every year or two. The last...Expand for more
couple of times I've gone in the summer when it is 116 degrees in the shade. I guess I turned out tougher than most of us thought I could be. This past year I taught middle school boys' PE. Just when I thought life couldn't get any crazier....
I only get back to Texas every few years since my mom is still there and she likes me to come "home". My dad passed away in 2001. I struggle with the humidity, since we only get ours during our monsoon time. Mom says you don't die in Arizona, you only dry up and blow away.
I have such good memories of growing up in Pearland with some of the greatest people. I wish I could see you all when I go home. Perhpas we'll be able to touch base when we have our next reunion.
