Rebecca Tobitt:

CLASS OF 1961
Woodland, CA

Rebecca's Story

After graduating in 1961 I attended UOP in Stockton where I met and married my husband Tad in 1964. I graduated in 1965 with my degrees in Education and History and Political Science. I taught in San Jose while Tad did a Master's program at Stanford and in Red Bluff until our son Jamie was born in 1967 followed by his sister Molly in 1969. Tad's work took us to the Bay Area and Pleasanton for 3 years and then to South Lake Tahoe for 5 years. I didn't go back to full time teaching but did home teaching, substituting, and private tutoring. My one claim to fame was when I was hired for a week as the private tutor for the children of Don Rickles. In 1977 we left Tahoe and moved to Fairfield where we still live. I went back to teaching full time in 1978 at the middle school level and didn't leave until I retired in 2004. I loved middle school and was fortunate to be the facilitator of the Gifted and Talented Program at our school, teaching 7th and 8th grade social science. Occasionally, I got drafted to teach English or Math (if you were in any of my math classes, please don't laugh!)but my real love is social science. Tad and I have enjoyed traveling as much as possible, visiting New England, the Middle states, Southwest, Italy, France, Germany, and the Britist Isles. In our "younger " years, we've done a lot of Europe but now we're focusing more on the US. We've had trailers on and off for almost 35 years but now have invested in a 2010 motorhome and love to pick up and...Expand for more
go whenever we want. Last year we took a trip with friends to Jackson Hole, Mt. Rushmore, Little Big Horn and Yellowstone. So far this year we've been to Indio, California, and Quartzsite, Arizona and heading out for Three Rivers, Jackson, San Andres, and Redding. For 2012 we're planning on taking a motor coach sponsored trip to Alaska, being gone a little over 2 months and driving over 7,000 miles. This July we went to Ireland and England where we will be staying with Tad's cousins in Bournmouth. We were even able to see the Queen during her last official visit of her Jubilee. At one point we were only 10 feet away from her! Along with our travels, Tad and I are both amateur photographers. We've taken various photography classes over the years and have even entered some competitons, usually at the Dixon May Fair. My favorite subjects to photograph are my three grandchildren, Amelia, Miles and William. We were able to take Amelia and Miles with their Dad Jamie to Disney World over their spring break this year. Mom stayed home with William who at three was a little too young for the trip. Jamie is a pharmacist working for Vertex and Molly is a free lance video editor. She and her husband have dogs. On September 16, 2010, I had a major heart attack but, with a great doctor who had a stent in my heart in 11 minutes from the time I arrived at the hospital, I'm back doing even more than I did before. Just goes to show that life is what happens when you are making plans!
