Reg's Story
Hi, all. Since you presumably knew me back in the day, I won't bother to fib about my age, which is 39.
I finally got married, in 1993, to a fine Catholic girl, and it's probably the best thing I've ever done. To my surprise and amazement, we now have five kids, ages 4 to 13. The first three are girls, the final two are boys. I'm teaching US history in a "gifted" program in a public school here just outside of Richmond, VA.
I very much think there's more ahead in life, but I just don't know what! Sometimes I have the thought that I might be getting older (yes, I'm joking), and I can see the appeal of "retirement." But I do not do well when idle -- I never have, though I've had plenty of idleness in my day, some of which some of you can recall. So I expect to keep busy for some time to come, God willing.
Speakin' o' God, I read something today about the brain. Recent research involving brain scans suggests that more spiritually oriented people have a quieter region in the right parietal lobe. That region of the brain has a kind of "Me-definer." When that "Me-definer" is quieted, one becomes more selfless, which lends itself to being more spiritual. I mention all this because I'm pretty sure my ...Expand for more
right parietal lobe has been on high for much of my life, and I'd like to tone it down. Happily, research suggests that prayer and meditation can do this. So, as I write this on Dec. 30, 2008, I'm thinking a new year's resolution will be more prayer (and maybe even to practice some meditation techniques). Becoming more selfless and less selfish would be a good thing for me. (By the way, yeah, I believe in science, and I believe in God.)
Hey, hope the above made sense. Didn't mean to get all ethereal on you.
Some of you may recall that I was involved in music, playing the cornet in the school band, and guitar in various bands with such fellow South (and Hayward) classmates as Ed Shaw, Kenny Lake, Jim Everingham, Tom Wickoff and Lynn Gordin). Music continues to be very satisfying to me, but I am only a listener. (OK, on rare occasions, usually when too much red wine has been poured into my glass, I pull out an acoustic guitar and play Beatles and the like). I enjoy all kinds of stuff -- Latin, jazz, classical, pop, world, bluegrass, stuff from back in the day, etc.
There's more, but probably no one is going to see this anyway. If you do and you feel like emailing me, I can be found.
Cordially,
Reg
