Regie's Story

Life It's been an interesting one! As alot of you know Juli Kay and I married in 1970. We had two wonderful kids, Brad and Cindy. Brad still lives in Smyrna working at Walmart and Cindy is married living in Charlotte, NC with our three grandaughters and another on the way (due May '10). They are 6,4 & 2. Cindy is a teacher but a stay at home Mom for now! Juli and I divorced in 1991. Juli left and Brad, Cindy and I kept on trucking! It was tough but we made it. I did very little dating but was called by Carole Cheek a few months after our divorce. Carole and I started dating a few months later and low and behold we married in Feb. 1993 and have been going strong since. Carole had a daughter named Katie which I adopted (she is presently 20 in school in Colorado after 2 yrs at Auburn. We are also guardians for a 9 year old African boy named Bulah whom we have had since he was 16 months old and his brother Moe (14), whom we have had since this past May ('09). So as I said it has been interesting!! Never a dull moment for sure. I worked with the same Design/Construction company for 20 years only to have them file bankruptcy in Feb. '03. So, I started my own Design/Construction Firm (Professional Group Assoc. LLC) and am struggling to keep it going in this economy. Unfortunately, we specialize in the financial market!! (Hasn't been too good to us the last 18 months!).And in my spare time,I teach Business Seminars around the world (China, Bosnia, Turkey,& Ukraine) for our Missions Dept at our Church. Carole retired from 28 years in the Insurance Industry when Katie started playing sports a few years ago and is now a taxi driver for Bulah and Moe! They are all on the go all the time. School High School was so long ago, I am not sure I can remember enough to write about. Fortunately for me, my mom and dad are still alive and living in Alabama. On one of their trips to see us, they got a wild hair and wanted to 'ride around the "old" neighborhoods and schools'. Well after some looking, we found Gordon. Boy it sure looks small compared to when we walked those halls. I took some pictures so if any of you are interested and want, I could scan them and email to you. The building still looks the same-just smaller looking! They have added a building to the front facing Tilly Mill. I really enjoyed my time then and all the friendships. It's too bad we do not do a better job of staying in touch but maybe through the new hi-tech systems, email and sites like 'classmates', we can do a better job. I really look forward to the reunions. College Once I got beat up in Kansas State trying to play football, I came back to Georgia and got more serious about life and an education. Got my Architectura...Expand for more
l Degree from a Technical College (Southern Tech in Marietta)and have gone much further than I could have imagined even if I had attempted it at Tech or other more highly regarded Architectural Schools. Workplace I worked for small one to four man Architectural Firms early in my career to learn the business. My long range goal however was to work for a large national or international firm. I did this until the mid seventies when I moved to Montgomery to work for a regional (southeast) architecural firm. I worked for two firms in Montgomery before coming back to Georgia to Marietta to go to work for a large national (with some international projects) design/build firm-Carlson. I worked with Carlson for 20 years doing alot of different things and going thru alot from a business standpoint. In the early 80's, Carlson was a $400 million revenue company and I was in sales with them. They were bought by a French construction company in the mid '80's and I became involved in Project Management and Design Management. When the French economy went south in the early '90's, three employees bought the company. We were down to 35 employees at the time and I was working on a $65m project on the west coast for them at the time. I commuted for 3 years from Atlanta to the West Coast!!! Crazy! But, things went great the next 10 years and we grew to 1000 employees and $300m again. I was Ex. VP reporting to the owners and had responsibility for 6 offices: Chicago, NY, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville (about 500 staff). Then, in Feb '03, Carlson filed Bankruptcy. So I went from being on top of the world in business to what now! So, myself and another employee decided to start our own business and we kept the southeast operations of Carlson going as a new company. We operate from Texas, to Ill, to DC to Fla. We still do Design/Construction just as we did at Carlson. We have about 20 employees. It's been a struggle but things are looking better! We'll see- This past year ('09) my partner lost his wife to cancer and he wanted out of the business so I have bought him out-we do all commercial projects-so any of you with companies needing Design or Construction there's your excuse to get in touch with me!!!! Military I went thru the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School-was similar to ROTC. The exception was, we went to six week summer camps in Quantico in lieu of the 2 week camps ROTC candidates went to. Also, OCS allowed you the option of accepting your commission or declining it upon graduating. Having a one year old son and a good job at the time, I declined my 2nd Lieutenant commission upon graduation but the experience of going through the Marine Corps OCS is one I will never forget!
