Jerry's Story
NEW, NEW UPDATE--Writing my Memoir through Kuhn Projects, my NYC literary agency. Finished Manuscript for presentation to potential Publishers, happening soon! This deals with Southside beginnings and the path to UVa with dreams that come true.
NEW UPDATE-- DONE! I am a WAHOO! I walked the Lawn May 18th, 2014 at age 70 and won the honors of Honor, I graduated with Distinction from the University of Virginia . . . CHI PHI ALPHA Fraternity Brother at UVa! Enjoyed some time this year with Bill Sturman's children and grandchildren.
PICTURE is with Wiliamsburg THOMAS JEFFERSON at UVa on JEFERSING DAY--Classes are marvelous, and due to my enthusiasm in the student section at JPJ, I was lucky enough to be chosen for a full color feature story on THE COVER of the Daily ProgressI For newspaper buffs, the story was on the top of the page above the fold. Life cannot be any more exciting than this. Being on the front page of the Wall Street Journal with Obama and the Pope, and a CBS Nightly News segment on my diploma ceremony that aired May 19 tops that one!
To all of my old friends, family, classmates, JM and GW baseball players, teachers, administration personnel at my schools... this is, finally, me.
And a special God Bless for Principal Angelo Setien. Nearly three years ago he helped me get a new copy of my lost GWHS diploma. He has been one of my biggest cheerleaders through the years of Community College and UVa undergraduate studies.
I stayed in Richmond for most of the last 50 years, and have been married to Susan Findlay of Roanoke for last 46. I was an auto racer (road racing sports cars) for 30 years, ran the Richmond Men's Senior Baseball Leauge for five years (over-30 players only), have been a free lance witer for almost all of my life...Expand for more
, worked as sports writer and city desk intern for Richmond T-D for a number of years, starting in 1961 as a friday night score recorder at the downtown office, and rode the bus from Stop 9, on The Pike! Susan was with Thalhimer's for 24 years after graduating from VCU with a BFA. You all know the sad story of that wonderful company disappearing. This was all made possible by my wife Susan, sister Nancy Barrett, my deceased parents and the teachers and administrators who saw what I couldn't... my ability and talent going to waste.
My philosophy is complicated in some areas, but ultimately crystal clear in this one: It is impossible to be or do everything you desire, but deliciously attainable to chase any reasonable goal. That's where I am, and it is never, ever too late to seize the day and chase away the doubts that keep you from accomplishment. Always remember that you must be many things in your life before you become anything at all. I have become the man I always wanted to be . . . what will your final story tell the world?
My best wishes to all of you, and may your days be filled with new revelations about what you are, can be, and mean to others you have touched.
We have lived long, meaningful lives, and I am sure our trees of life will always bear fruit if you cultivate your mind, heart and soul (this is where I say "Goodbye, and thanks for all the Fish!" Courtesy of the late Douglas Adams).
