Renee's Story

Actually, I finished HS in January of 1972. Contrary to rumors...I was not pregnant! In fact, I never had any biological children...but adopted 6. I now have 9 grandchildren. Jim Castro and I were married in February 1972 and we moved to San Leandro,CA. (Garri Marlin introduced us on a blind date!) I went to college there and started selling Real Estate. Eventually went into construction and mortgage lending. We were divorced 7 years later and I was single for many years. Married Scott DeBenning in 1991. He worked for HP and we were transferred to Denver, CO in 1995. I didn't sell real estate anymore but went into mortgage lending full time and in 2001 I opened Zion Financial LLC. Scott lost his 2nd battle with cancer in 2003. I am now married to Ken Bertapelle. Ken is a retired IT engineer and is now teaching math in Cortez, CO, We moved to Dolores, CO in Dec. of 2005. This is my families homestead of 150 years. Some of you will remember in HS my sister Sherrie and I left right after school was out for the summer. We came here to CO to spend the summer with our grandparents. This is really the only place I have ever wanted to live. I moved my business here to the Four Corners area of CO and doing loans in all 50 states. NOW, are you ready for this! I am also a Deputy Sheriff. I love it! This includes the Sheriff's Posse! We are horseback with the Posse and in search & rescue. And just for grins...I made Sgt in December. We raise Jack Russell Terriers also. I have 8! Also we have a horse rescue. This is Renee King! Mortgage Lender, Deputy Sheriff, Absolute animal lover. If I could go back and chan...Expand for more
ge things, I would do a few things different. I would of not married right out of HS but joined the Air Force and became a helo pilot. I don't think I ever set out to be a nurse, a real estate broker, or a mortgage broker... it just happened. Got involved in real estate to get through college. The only thing I ever set out to do was to become a deputy sheriff. LOL. Never cared one bit about money or things. Had a lot of money and have had almost nothing. I am much happier without the coperate structure and the bucks. If it was from my family, or to preserve family history, that is what I loved the most. I love the old South West and here I am. We own the family ranch now ha, we bought the farm!!!and live in my great-grandmother's 100 year old house. (I have built closets bigger than my house). My office is the original one room cabin, 140 years old. My barn is about the same age, actually a little older. We live on a dirt road and can only get dial up! We have propane heat, no dishwasher or garbage disposal. I no longer want a cell phone...as if we could get good receiption anyway. During storms we may be out of power for days. We are really about 50 years behind times here and this is just fine with us. I am a member of the Cortez Rotary, Board of Realtors, Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club and the Chamber of Commerce. I travel to my other office in Castle Rock where we still have our other house. Can't sell it...can't fit the furnature in this little house LOL. Yes the mortgage business sucks right now! Law enforcement activity is up! Go figure! Don't know how to run spell check on this site...LOL
