Reynold (Jim)'s Story

Like many boys born in 1943, I was named after my father lest he not return from the war. My middle name was different, so as a child, I was known as Jim. I suspect that those boys not named after their father were often named after a general. Many of those generals had the first name James so I found myself only one James in classrooms with several boys of the same name. Thus when I entered high school, I registered as Reynold. The sports reporter for the CARDINAL STAR apparently could not spell Reynold so my name appeared in the school paper as Reggie. Most of my high school classmates know me as Reggie. Then when I entered college, my great aunt introduced me to a fraternity president. During rush he grabbed my name tag and changed the name to Jim. I now go by the name Reynold, but quite frankly am never sure what name people know me by. I was the first jock in my family. I went out for freshman football, but was so small I got pushed into cross country the next year. My main sport was swimming. I also gave track a try, but I am a distance runner so I never could do well on the short races (Yes, to me a mile is short.) My performance was not fantastic, but I did earn letters in cross country and swimming. I learned a lot of self discipline fro...Expand for more
m athletics. Even though I was not a star, I gain a lot of self confidence. I studied chemistry at Northwestern University where I met my wife, Gay (also known as Cookie). Then I went to The Institute of Paper Chemistry for a graduate degree. Armed with my BA in chemistry and MS in pulp and paper technology, I worked in the pulp and paper industry for 30 years. I worked for a variety of mills in Wisconsin, Indiana and Massachusetts. My assignments included being a process engineer, doing applied research, quality control, product development, environmental management and technical supervision. I ended my career as a consultant. After retirement, I got a teaching license at night school and taught science and math in high schools in New Mexico. Gay and I have two children, Amy and Wesley. Both are out of the nest with careers of their own. Amy is a computer specialist. Wes is an engineering manager. We live in rural New Mexico south of Albuquerque. I still run for fun and exercise. We garden and enjoy outdoors activities. Until the last of our pets died, we spoiled our dogs and cats. Now fully retired, I write fiction as a hobby. I have published two books: CHASED ACROSS AUSTRALIA and MY KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR. I maintain a blog and a website.
