Rhonwyn's Story

Hello friends! It's hard to believe that 43 years have gone by since graduation from Bay High School. A lot has happened to me in those 43 years. Right after graduation, I attended Gulf Coast Junior College and then went on to University of West Florida, where I graduated in 1973 with a degree in Early Childhood Ed. I married "the love of my life" in Dec.'72 and we have been married 40 years, this coming December. Tom and I met on a blind date while he was stationed at Tyndall Air Force base. We are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Kimberly(36) & Julie (33). Kimberly graduated from Florida State in '2000 and married Russ Mizell eight years ago. They live in Tampa and both work at MetLife headquarters--IT people. Julie graduated from Florida State in 2002 and then went on to the Univ.of Fla dental school. She graduated May, 2008 and completed a residency at UAB Medical center. She ioined a dental practice in Jacksonville-Orange Park and has been working there 5 years. Tom and I are the proud grandparents to two beautiful grandchildren. Jack is 4 1/2 and Ella is 15 mths. They are the joy of our life. We have one cat, Sydney, who runs the household. Tom will be retiring in two years so we'll see what happens after that. I'd love to live closer to my grandchildren and also be able to do more traveling- see more of this USA. We'll see what the future brings! March, 2014 It has been almost a year since my husband took an early retirement and this year has flown by so quickly. We are still living in Tallahassee and will wait until I retire in 2 years to see if we will be moving closer to our children. Tom is enjoying the stress free life from retail and found himself a part-time job working for the Tallahassee Auto auction. he works with a group of retired men and women, around 20-25 hrs a week. He has helped pick up the load around the house-chores- and I am really enjoying that. Last summer we had the whole summer together since I have it off from school so that was different. It was nice to decide to up and go on a picnic, or take off to the beach for the day! This coming summer, we are taking a 2 week road trip north, visiting some of his family in Virginia, spending 4 days in Washington DC, heading up to the Amish country and then spending a few days in New York City touring. We won't have to rush back home because of wor, which will be nice! My grandchildren are growing up too quickly. Jack will be 6 in May and Ella is 2 1/2. We try to get down to Tampa as often as possible to see them. Our daughter Julie and her husband John have been married 1 1/2 yrs but no children yet. We had to say goodbye to our cat, Sydney last summer. He was 19 years old and spent the last 16 years of his life as a part of our family. We really miss him but don't have any plans on replacing him. No more pets for us! Hope all of my former school friends are doing well and wish you a "Happy Spring"! July 2014 Checking in with new updates. Tom has retired as of a year ago and is really enjoying the "no stress" life. We spent last summer doing a lot of chores around the house-painting, remodeling a bathroom, cleaning out attic and garage, etc. We got a lot accomplished and felt good about it. Tom went to Canada with his brother on a fishing trip so it was a good way for him to ease into retirement. After I started back to work in August(working in school system), Tom got a part time job working for the Tallahassee Auto Auction. He is loving his job and can take off anytime and know that it's there when he returns. I have two more years to work before I retire so I am looking forward to that. This summer, we took a 17 day road trip north, visiting Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. We visited with family and spent 4 days touring Washington DC. We spent a weekend in New York City and toured and went to a Broadway play, which was fabulous. I think I can get used to touring around and going on trips :) We went tent camping over the Fourth of July holiday and had a great time at Pine Mountain, GA. We will eventually buy a travel trailer but for now, we still enjoy the tent camping. Summer is beginning to come to a close for me and it will be back to work but wanted to wish everyone a "Happy Summer" and hope everyone is doing great! June 2015 New updates in my family- I am one year away from retirement. Hooray! Tom & I are going to buy a travel trailer when I retire and hit the road traveling. There are so many places that we want to visit. This summer, we are going to Alaska on a 12 day land and sea cruise. We will spend a few days visiting Vancover and Victoria and then tour Seattle before heading home. Our family is expanding. Julie and John are expecting a baby girl the firs...Expand for more
t of September. So excited to welcome her to our family! September, 2015 Well, our little granddaughter surprised us and arrived two weeks early. Hattie Wren Bailey was born on Aug. 24, weighing 7 lb 14 oz. 21" long. She, mom and dad are doing great! Tom, me and John's mom went over to Jax as soon as they called that morning to tell us that Julie's water had broken. We stayed at the hospital all afternoon, anxiously awaiting Hattie's arrival. She was born at 7:34 that evening. We stayed for most of the week and enjoyed our time with our children and little granddaughter. Life is great and grandchildren are even better! June, 2016 Well, the day that I have waited for has arrived. As of May 27, 2016, I am retired! I keep thinking that I need to maximize my time off this summer( I've had the summers off in the past because I worked for the school system), but then I realize that I will have an "endless summer". Everyone keeps asking me what am I going to do to stay busy, well, I need to experience this a while before I can give them an answer. The week after I retired, I spent that week in Jacksonville helping my daughter with her baby. Julie's husband is gone for the summer with his job so I will help her as much as possible this summer. Tom and I are also going to Tampa to keep our other two grandchildren for 5 days in July. Then we have a vacation up in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania with some of Tom's family. The summer already seems to be filled with going places and we do have a long list of "to dos"for around the house. Our plans for the future is to buy a travel trailer and do some traveling. We got the new truck recently so next comes the trailer. I look forward to this new chapter in our lives and hope it holds many fun adventures. I'll keep you posted from time to time :) Update: On 4th of July weekend, Tom and I went up to Macon, GA and bought a 24' Cruiser Funfinder travel trailer. We will go on Aug. 8th to learn how to use it and pick it up. We have booked a trip from there to Pine Mtn. GA for 4 days, then a trip to Top Sail in Destin, and last night we booked a trip to St. Augustine Beach for the spring. There are so many places that we want to travel to so I'm sure the other months and days will fill up eventually. We are finding that the popular places have to be booked months out. Happy traveling is in our future! Aug. 9, 2016 We are now the owners of a new Cruiser FunFinder travel trailer. We picked it up this week from Macon, GA and took it over to Pine Mtn. RV park for our "maiden voyage". It was a wonderful 3 days of bonding with our trailer and touring the area. We have already booked another place for this weekend and are trying to book at least one trip a month. I am really enjoying this retirement stuff!!! 2017- we have really been enjoying our travel trailer. We have made trips to the beach, Savannah, Virginia, south Florida & Georgia. We have booked 5 trips for the first part of 2018. Our daughter, Julie, moved back to Tallahassee with her family and bought a home near us. We get to see our little granddaughter, Hattie, more frequently now. Tom and I took a trip to Europe this past spring. We went to London & Paris & Normandy. Saw all the sights & arrived home safely. Hoping to see the southwest and some National Parks next year here in the US. Sept. 10, 2018 Our daughter, Julie, gave birth to her second child, a little boy, who they named Henry Ray Bailey. He came very quickly and weighed 9 lbs. He completes their family in such a special way. My daddy, Ray Dunn, would have been so honored to know that his great-grandchild was named after him. April, 2021 Life has been so crazy this past year, but we are surviving it. Tom took a leave from his part time job for awhile, but went back to work. He needs to be out of the house and with people. As for me, I went from volunteering at the school, a lot, to not being able to go up and see my old friends. Our granddaughter started kindergarten last Aug. and was so looking forward to "Nana" being on campus. I found out quickly that the teachers loved the masks that I was making. I got the pattern off of Youtube and for this past year, my sewing machine has stayed quite busy. The teachers buy as many as I can produce. Word has gotten around and I am making them for a friend's doctor office, my daughter's dental office, some of Tom's friends have requested them and I've given a lot away to family and friends. I have sewn over 1,500 of them. I will be so glad when they tell us that we no longer have to wear them out! Tom and I have been traveling a lot this past year though. We've had our travel trailer for 5 yrs. this summer and have gone on 40 trips. We have really enjoyed our "home on wheels".
