Ric's Story

Where do you begin after nearly 45 years!! Left AAHS and went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and double majored in Econ & Communications. Went to NU on a full swimming scholarship , but my Olympic year went bust as I contracted bursitis in both shoulders and had to sit out watching it on TV. Decided that there was more to life than getting up at 5am to swim 5 miles, so the swimming career went downhill from there. Did the MBA "thing" at NU's Kellogg School of Management and went into the real world with P&G in Cincinnati on the brand management team for "personal products" on the Crest toothpaste account. Hated it, but became interested in the TV biz, especially on the sales side. Could use my econ/stats education to put together media proposals to sell to advertisers. Girl I dated at NU was a news anchor in Louisville and I got a local TV sales job there and turned the "phonebook" into the second biggest billing list at the station in little over a year and was hired away by a station in Cincinnati (had to go back...love Skyline Chili!). Stayed there about a year before I left for my first job with ABC-TV, still in sales. Went to San Francisco and spent two of the happiest years of my career and personal life there. Think about it; a single, straight male in a city that size making a very nice six-figure salary. Heaven. But was I smart and stayed? Was I satisfied with my status and career path? NO! And now, 30+ years later, I see the follies of my ways! Ambition will kill logic every time! So being the head-strong and egotistical person I was/am? (Thinking I was on a fast track to become president of ABC-TV), I took a larger job in network sales in Los Angeles. LA was great to live in (I was a very "bad boy" in those days! Very bad! Don't know why I am still alive today "bad"), but the job was a "killer". Many long nights working late and dealing with advertising agencies that couldn't find their butt with both hands. Most frustrating. So what did I do? Went to New York City and did the same thing (but switched to selling ABC Sports only. Got to go to the Olympics, Kentucky Derby, Super Bowls and all the major sporting events ABC covered, all expenses paid. Great "perks", but killer job). Love NYC and probably slept a total of 8 hours the two years I was there. Still love going back to get my fix of the Big Apple several times a year. Decided to go back to a local station and so took a management position in New Orleans. Great city, but not great memories as it's where I met & married my now ex-wife. She is a TV writer/producer (and ex-Ford model. Was the Ivory Soap Girl after Marylyn Chambers got the boot when she did Behind The Green Door) in ...Expand for more
Hollywood and was in NOLA for research on a show she ended up writing on (Frank's Place; one season on CBS).Met & married in seven weeks. Yeah, I know, what was I thinking? Well, I certainly wasn't thinking with my brain! Since she made infinitely more money than I did (obscene how much money is thrown at "creative people" in Hollywood) we moved back to LA and I went back to my old job at ABC. We lived the life in LaLa land...had the big home NORTH of Sunset Blvd (can't live south or your "not hip"...vomit) with the housekeeper, gardener, pool guy, cook (I drew the line at her wanting a "driver") a far cry from the AAHS days of living in Douglas Valley and taking the bus to AAHS!! Went to the Oscars, Emmy Awards, CMA's and walked the "carpet" and became friends with several "stars" who will remain nameless as I am still friends with them, while "she's" not. But ultimately, the lifestyle gets to you and she started believing her own publicity and things became unbearable, so we divorced. Fortunately, no kids. I escaped the land of milk, honey and broken promises and went back to my "roots" literally, to Birmingham, Alabama where I helped to turn around two TV stations. Had a great time there (chose to root for "Bama" rather than Auburn...you HAVE to choose sides), but got a call to come down here to the Mobile area to do the same thing. Love the water, beaches and great seafood and had a condo on the beach, so it was a "no-brainer". A year ago we were bought by Sinclair Broadcasting which is the largest owner of TV stations in the US. Now I oversee four stations; two in Mobile and two in Pensacola, Florida. Currently I am looking for my "ultimate beach house", but haven't found the right one just yet. And then there's the question of hurricanes and a beach house, so I am trying to think things through before running headstrong again! Maybe I'm "maturing" and learning! NAH! No fun in that! Long-distance dating a wonderful lady who is one of the top interior designers in the US (twice appearing in Architectural Digest) and lives in Houston. We see each other a couple of times a month and share common interests in Smooth Jazz; caviar and very fine French and Napa Reds. We jointly own a home in Durango, near Purgatory and go up there several times a year. We have talked about the "M"-word, but are happy with our current situation. Within the next couple of years, we will retire and find that special "beach house". NO hurricanes allowed! There you have it in a "nutshell". I have been unable to make any reunions, however the 50th is a "must do" as I hope it is for all of you. It would be great to see all my old swimming buddies and to reminisce about all our antics at AAHS.
