Ric's Story
The highlight of the "Summer of Love 2009" celebration on 4th Avenue was seeing Susan Jacks perform at the Vine Street stage. Although her set was too short (only 35 minutes) she managed to sing most of her hits, including the song everyone wanted to hear, "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" (Look it up on YouTube by typing "poppy family billy")
After the show she met her adoring public. I rushed home (I live two blocks away) and grabbed my Poppy Family and Susan Jacks' albums to show her. She was going to autograph them all, but I told her one was enough. I thanked her and kissed her right cheek.
But I was desperate to have a picture taken with her, so I asked this guy who had a camera if he would take a picture of me with Susan and e-mail it to me. He agreed, so I put my left arm around Susan's waist and she put her right arm around my waist and we smiled for the camera. It was the thrill of a lifetime for ...Expand for more
me. (The guy turned out to be her brother, Gerry Pesklevits.)
Susan looks as beautiful today as she did 40 years ago. And she is an incredibly nice person. She patiently posed for dozens of pictures with her adoring fans and signed autograph after autograph. She was genuinely happy to be performing in Kits and kept thanking us for coming out.
Later I looked up Susan in Facebook, and there she was, so I sent her a message asking her to be my friend. The next morning I checked my e-mail and was ecstatic when I saw the line: "Susan Jacks has confirmed you as a friend on Facebook."
Today (August 19) is her 61st birthday, and dozens of her Facebook friends have written birthday greetings on her wall.
By the way, I asked Susan the question I've been dying to ask her for almost 40 years. "Susan, did Billy ever tell you which way he was going?" She gave me a serious look and answered, "You know, he never did!"
