Rich Fiorillo:

CLASS OF 1977
Hightstown, NJ

Rich's Story

If anyone remembers me in HS, and that would mean your memory has held up better than mine, probably the last thing you'd imagine me as would be a high school teacher. What, with all the frustration I caused my teachers by never doing homework and coming to class, well, let's just say not all that prepared to learn. But, against the odds, this year I finally decided to take a HS job teaching physics. And, guess what, I can see myself in many of my students. Ouch. I'd considered teaching about a decade ago and got my certification, but postponed it because my kids were too young at the time,...Expand for more
and I realised when I student taught that it would be a 24 hour a day job. So I took a nice job teaching and managing labs in a university. The idea to teach physics came after years of building stuff - houses, cabinets etc - so it just seemed natural, right? If I survive this year, I might consider continuing and spending my remaining years as a teacher. But, survival is not easy when 100 students a day want to challenge you and you don't have time to sleep. Update: 4.14.2010 I lasted 2 years. Only. Teaching is hard. Spent the past year in a research lab fixing equipment. Less stress.
