Rich's Story

Life in 2006 This has been some year for me! Both of my daughters have been married, a brother-in-law was killed in Iraq, and I ended up in the hospital for a heart procedure while getting ready to run the Lincoln Marathon. I didn't have blood pressure or cholesterol problems, but evidently the "other" stresses of my life nearly did me in. Luckily, I caught the problem, thinking I had a lung/sinus infection! I guess I was the poster-boy for denial. I've since gone through some cardiac rehab and am currently trying to regain my former running ability. It has been a little tougher than I expected. My daughters, while being "married off" and officially "off the pay-roll" remain a center of my life. The oldest is living in Spain. She is not on "active duty" with the Air Force, but remains in an "individual reserve role". Her husband is a pilot in the Spanish Air Force. The youngest is finishing up at UNL, applying to optometry schools that will be located near a school her husband can also pursue a doctorate degree in chemistry. I still maintain my little corner of the world teaching 6th grade at Ord Elementary School. I no longer coach (except myself, in the afore mentioned running attempts!) and still do a little reffing of basketball and umping baseball/softball. Of course, I always have stuff to do around the house, yet it seems to not get done at times! All of these little old ladies seem to think I don't have enough to keep me busy, so they call and ask me if I can do this and that. I figure in a few years I'll be in the same position, and it'll be my turn to do the calling! I sure appreciate all the work those in Omaha have done to maintain our reunions every 5 years! I've talked to a few other classes and they don't seem to have that organization and individuals willing to put in all that work! That seems to cover most of my world--I better get supper ready before my wife, Claudia, gets home from work! January 2009 Update! Life hasn't changed much! Except for the a...Expand for more
ddition of my grandson, and the "subtraction" a substantial portion of my internal anatomy that was found to be cancerous. Ouch! It always seems to be something that's slowing me down. Hopefully, by next Spring I can return to the roads and get in shape again to participate in some road runs and "Senior" track meets! Notice I say "participate", being "competitive" in any sense of the word other than against my own efforts is not in my vocabulary. Being able to be with friends and run a "race" with them is all that's necessary for my amusement. We did do some traveling to Spain before my surgery and to California after. Both were very enjoyable, but the hassle at times in some airports makes it just "bearable". From doorstep to doorstep, it's 24 hours to Madrid from Ord and 18 hours to Berkeley (a foreign "country" in its own particular way!). But I am glad my daughter chose that school for her advanced studies, I'm sure that she will be taught in a way that will emphasize a concern for others while learning a skill that will benefit society. One thing I have figured out, my children are much better human beings than I ever could imagine myself. I guess I might have been a good "bad" example! Whatever Dad would have done, I'm sure they will do just the opposite! For that, I am grateful!! Until my next update--look up the Ryan Knight website! June, 2011 I don't seem to get on here very often, every 2-3 years! Most of the story hasn't changed, I'm still teaching, but another grandson has been added. I get to see them several times a year (if I'm lucky) since they are still in Spain. Daughter #2 is finishing her optometry program, and she and her husband will actually be in the working world after being "professional students" since entering kindergarten. Not much else to add, my health remains somewhat stable, according to the doctors, so all of my other complaints must be "age related". I'll admit that, while others seem not to be able to notice that inevitable conclusion!
