Richard's Story

Okay, where to start. My wife Ellen and I met in college. We've now been married for 37 years (as of May 2012). We have two children, a son Paul, who is 26 and married with two young children (one two weeks old and the other 22 months) and graduated law school this year, and a daughter, Rebecca, who is 24 and attending to graduate school at night for a master's in government. I've been teaching History at the U.S. Naval Academy for the last 30 years and am currently the department chair. (You can be a liberal and still prosper at the Naval Academy. Who knew?) Professionally I am, as weird as it sounds, a medieval historian specializing in Anglo-Saxon England and medieval military history. I started off...Expand for more
at Columbia majoring in Engineering and discovered that I hated everything about it--which would have come as no surprise to my high school math and science teachers. So I became an American History major with the idea of going to law school. When I met Ellen she was a medieval studies major at Barnard.I took a medieval history course to have more in common with her. Of course, I ended up as a medieval historian and she became a lawyer. I've written a couple of books, one of which (a biography of Alfred the Great) is even readable. My claim to fame at the Naval Academy is that I'm the only faculty member to have won all three civilian excellence awards: for teaching, research, and service.
