Richard's Story
I worked for the Dept of Defense at Fort Holabird for 4 years, and decided to transfer to Social Security in May of 1970. I worked at SSA in Baltimore until September of 1995, when my wife and I re-deployed to Fayetteville NC. I worked at the Lumberton SSA office until I retired in March of 2003. My wife retired from SSA in October 2005.
I became an avid UNC Basketball fan in the mid-70’s. I was able to attend the 1982 NCAA Championship in New Orleans, and watch Michael Jordan hit the winning basket. Re-deploying to NC in 1995 has allowed me to volunteer as an usher at the Smith Center for 18 seasons so far. That’s over 300 games. I received recognition as “Usher Of The Year for the 2009-10 season, receiving an autographed team basketball.
It is the best non-paying job that I have ever had.
Living in NC, I am able to go to some part of the NCAA tournament just about every year. I also like Carolina Women’s ...Expand for more
Basketball. Unfortunately, for the 2020-21 season, I won’t be able to enjoy my courtside seats due to Covid 19.
I volunteered as a Guardian Ad-Litem (child advocate) for 2 years, but it became too depressing to continue.
My wife, Martha and I have raised our grandson Chris, We are very proud of him. He graduated from.the College of Engineering at NC St University in Raleigh and is a software developer. Time flies, he’s 33!
We enjoy having some time to ourselves, and traveling. My sister and her family still live in Edgemere.
I volunteer with the AARP Tax-Aide program, preparing tax returns at our senior center for free. The seniors appreciate the service, and it gives me the satisfaction of helping others. I have always liked numbers! I didn’t feel safe in 2021 with the pandemic,
I was one of the 30k volunteers in the Moderna Covid 19 vaccine study. I was just the fat old diabetic type they needed.
