PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY I grew up in Bainbridge, New York, a small, historic town whose claim to fame includes being "home of Elsie the Cow" of Elmer's Glue. I spent years of my youth helping my father work a farm and graduated class of 1973 from high school in a class of about 100 (total!). I at...Expand for more
tended the State University of New York in Oneonta, where I received a bachelor's degree in Studio Art in 1977. I self-funded my education by working two full-time jobs as an early morning newsman and late night disc jockey on local, commercial radio stations. The breadth of my studies in many disciplines at SUNY has been instrumental in my business career. Today, I remain actively involved in supporting the school financially and as a member of the university president's advisory committee. I enjoyed the radio announcing experience so much that I intended to pursue a lifetime career in that direction, but fate would not allow it. On my first day of employment as an announcer for a "solid gold" radio station in Rochester, NY, I was cut to part-time, moved to midnight shift, lost my apartment, and all my personal belongings were stolen from my parked car, which was severely damaged in the process. With nothing left but my injured pride, I left Rochester and the radio business behind. Through similar twisting turns of fate I ultimately landed a position as a graphic designer for advertising agencies in the suburbs of New York City. By 1982, only 5 years after graduating from college, I founded my own design consulting firm, R.BIRD & Company, located in the heart of midtown Manhattan on 52nd Street until recently relocating just outside New York City. In the very little spare time I have, I attempt to revive my past interests in music. I play and record guitar, bass guitar and drums (as I did while in high school and college) and have a growing collection of vintage guitars. I enjoy fine music in all genres, from heavy metal to jazz to classical and opera. I am a patron member of the Carnegie Hall Society.
