Richard's Story

Life After HS I attended Olympic Jr. College in Bremerton for a year initially intending to major in chemistry, physics, or engineering. I then decided to have the GI Bill pay for the rest and joined the Air Force in '68. I was selected to be part of the group that monitors nuclear blasts from other countries for the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. I was trained to operate airborne nuclear detection and collection equipment. We would detect nuclear blasts in Russia, China, France in the South Pacific, etc then go chase down the cloud from the blast, fly into it and collect debris for analysis. We would also fly over the Nevada test site to monitor for leaks from the underground blasts. Anyway, I got to go to such interesting places as Pago Pago, Samoa to monitor the French South Pacific blasts; Japan where we would fly between Japan and Alaska monitoring the effluent from Russia and China, over the North Pole at 500 feet altitude while we orbited inside a Chinese nuclear cloud. It wasn't just a job, it was an adventure. what I used to do. I ended up in Japan where I got discharged from the Air Force in 1971 to attend Sophia University in Tokyo where I majored in Mathematics. I graduated from Sophia in 1975 with a BS in Math. I then became a teacher in Tokyo teaching technical subjects like science, engineering, and philosophy to Japanese that wanted courses in English as preparation for attending a school in an English speaking country. I needed to move on after a while so I came back to the States in 1977. I couldn't find anything of interest for a year so I decided to go back into the Air Force as an officer this time. I joined the Air Force again in 1978 after being out for over 6 years. This time I became a telecommunications officer. I went to Ohio State Univ and received a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering. I ended up in Hawaii, retiring from the Air Force as a Major. I worked for SAIC as a network engineer/systems analyst. In Aug 2004 SAIC sent me to Japan for about a year. Returned to Hawaii acting retired for a year before cost of living forced me back to work. I worked as a contractor doing network support again until Nov 2010 when I finally retired.
