Richard's Story
Life
I am no longer retired...I have gone back to work, if you can call it that. This year will be 7 years now I've been there. . I am working for Bass Pro, at the gun counter. Its like working for Disneyland. Its busier than I could have thought, but what a blast! Everything I love to do, I now get to talk about and get paid for doing it. I'm the NRA instructor there and teach a basic handgun course on the last Saturday of each month. I also give private lessons at a local range. Prior to my knee surgery i was the Hunter Education Instructor at Bass Pro, under the authority of California Fish and Wildlife.
Besides being an NRA instructor, I was past Director of the Shooting Sports program for the San Francisco Bay Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. After stepping down as director, I wanted to get back on the range and work with the scouts teaching them the fundamentals of firearms handling. I am also a Chief Range Safety Officer and teach people to run gun ranges. I teach firearm safety, hunter education, rifle, pistol, shotgun, handgun, black powder rifle and I teach home security. I am a California handgun safety Instructor under the Department of Justice and for a while, I also instructed rock climbing for the scout council. My latest is shooting for distance. A group I work with are retired SWAT snipers and a former Marine / FBI sniper instructor. About every other Monday we go to the Folsom Gun Club outside Sacramento and shoot from 500 meters to 600 and 1000 yards. The eyes aren't what they used to be, but i still shoot within the 9 and 10 rings. The 500 meter is what is called the steel range as it has steel silhouettes. Chickens at 200, pigs at 300, turkeys at 400 and rams at 500. The idea is to knock them over...a lot of fun. Best shot to date is a golf ball at 400 meters... the golf ball picture has been posted under photos.
I love photography as you can tell by some of my photos...I have been doing it for about 35 years and have enough equipment to open a studio. Only one thing stopped me...I don't believe in being a starving artist.
For several years I was a professional (world title) kickboxing judge for California and Nevada State Athletic Commissions, which is the reason for my e-mail address "kbjudge". This by the way was not a full time position...you only do one to two events a month, but a lot of fun doing things you enjoy.
I have three sons, Brian, Blaine and Brendon. Blaine, the middle son, earned his Eagle in scouting and the youngest, Brendon, also attained his Eagle rank. My Middle son, Blaine is into his music...he has played and taught guitar for about 9 years. He writes, plays and records his own music and was part of a band for a while. He enlisted in the Navy and went through training in Pensacola, Fl. training in Aviation electronics. He was freezing in Great Lakes over the wi...Expand for more
nter at boot camp and now he is complaining how hot Florida is.
My youngest, Brendon, won five martial arts championships a few years ago and was seated 1st in the NBL world standings. We went to the world finals in Myrtle Beach, So.Carolina. He fought well, but didn't make it to the final rounds, loosing by the penalty point from an accidental illegal kick. He finished 7th in the world standings, losing to Guatemala. Brendon graduated June 08 and took a trip to Israel for a month. While there he went quad running in the Sinai desert in Egypt...had a great time.
Along with Brendon's current training of Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai, my son and I are training in Krav Maga. Israeli hand to hand fighting.
The third one (Brian) who earned his Black Belt at 11 years old under Earnie Rayes, is also in the Navy ( 15 years now ), he re-enlisted for the 3rd time and was on the USS Princeton, as a petty officer 1st class. He served as a petty officer and AGIS spy tech on the USS Chancellorsville out of Japan for 3 years, then the USS Mustin as a plank holder( the first of 20 crew members) to finish getting the new ship ready for a full crew. He helped set an all time record for sea trials on a new ship...the best in the history of the Navy at the time. Brian just retired from the Navy after 16 years...medical. He has a nice house in Alpine, just above San Diego...2 1/2 acres and a fantastic view. His wife and my daughter-in-law just received her masters from San Diego State.
POST NOTE...will become a grandfather in October 2013
I enjoy taking trips on my Harley or just getting away for a ride on the open road for a few hours.
I build and fly giant scale radio control airplanes, as can be seen in my photos.
Have been involved with the Taylor Family Foundation for about 11-12 years (a camp for children w/debilitating or terminal illnesses)as an event supervisor for their "Day in the Park". Its the annual auction to raise funds to support the camp through out the year...we average 3 to 4 million dollars in a single day aided by many celebrities around the bay area. 2010 we had Mr Bill Gates attend and he bought a painting of Steve Young who was also there and autographed it for Mr Gates.
Another new event in my life...have been trying to get involved in executive or Judicial security. Several weeks ago a retired FBI friend had a body guard job during the Paul McCartney concert in SF Golden Gate park and asked me to be his back up. Less than two days work payed me more than i make for two weeks at a regular job and definitely not boring. Next year i'll see more jobs like that...looking forward to it.
Now recovering from shoulder surgery from a car wreck two years ago...was rear ended on the Altamont near Tracy, ca.
That pretty much catches things up for now.
As you can see, I like to keep active and life is anything but boring.
