Richard's Story

Life's been good to me so far! I currently live in Manchester, TN. A little agricultural town of 8,500 and the home of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. 750 and 2,500-acre farm surround my 3 acres of land and a house with a view of Cumberland Plateau and Mount Eagle. We live on the edge of the rim. It i and quiet and 68 miles from Nashville and 24 miles away from the 2nd most extensive cave system in the USA...Cumberland Caverns - 32 miles of cave trails. We moved to Manchester from Oviedo, Florida, in May 2005. We lived in Pawtucket, RI, from October 1973 to May 1974 and Central Florida from May 1974 to May 2005. Sandy and I have been married 50 years as of Oct 12, 2023. I married Sandra Wildgoose from Pawtucket, RI, on Oct 12, 1973. I met her at Rhode Island College at the first student mixer in September 1969. We never dated, bumped into, or saw each other until our final semester at RIC in January 1973 Sandy majored in Elementary Education, and I majored in Secondary Education I did my student teaching at Pilgrim High from Feb through June 1973. My supervising teacher was William Sheehan. I taught in Orlando, Florida, at Evans High and Meadow Brook Junior High from Aug 1974 through Dec 1981. I quit teaching and went into programming in Jan 1982. I worked on my MS Degree in Computer Science in Orlando at FTU, now UCF-University of Central Florida. While working on the degree, a local bank programmer position became available as a self-starter RPG programmer on the IBM System/34 learning RPGII. I was not learning as fast as I wanted to, so I turned to teaching the language with only a few months' experience because I knew I always learned more quickly when I taught the subject. (Learning How to Learn) I was an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Dept at Florida Southern College from 1982 to 1990, teaching RPG/II, and RPG/III RPG/400 for the IBM minicomputer. I still program in RPGIV in the new Free-Format RPG/IV on the IBM I - As/400 platform. I have coded in the same language on the same IBM platform for 42 years. Manchester is the perfect dark sky site for Astronomy. I have two telescopes: An Orion 5-inch refractor with 9x50 & Telrad finders, Assorted 2-inch and 1.25-inch eyepieces. The scope mounts on a Scope Buggy that I can wheel around anywhere, an Orion 5-inch Maksutov Cassegrain. I have three sets of binoculars on tripods, using the new Far Point mount and red dot reflex finders on top of the support. Orion 10x50, Celestron 15x70, and Bushnell 16x50. I work from home again 23 years of doing this now) as a contract RPGIV/ILE programmer on the IBM i - AS/400 minicomputer (2000-2008 Caribbean Software, 2008-2023 Averitt Express) I have programmed many business applications (see my LinkedIn page for work experience and education). * Wholesale Distribution - Order Entry/Pick Tickets/Shop Work Orders/EDI. * Warehouse Inventory Systems, Transportation, Scheduling, Jail Management. * Sales Analysis/Forecasting, Utility Billing, Beverage Industry. * Sunkist Juice Processing, Insurance Industry, Time, and Billing. * Contact Management, Call Centers, Customer Care, Help Desk. * Banking - ATM, Internet On-Line Banking/Bill Pay, Voice Response Units. * Hospital Patient Billing and Admittance, Mental Health Centers. * Financials - Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger Journal Entries and * Fixed Assets. * Truckload Applications and Financials. I still enjoy (was "Damaged" and "Changed Forever" by what was called "Underground Progressive Rock." This music was on College "Underground FM Radio" stations. Rhode Island had one of the best. It was WBRU, broadcasting from Brown University. I started listening to this station in 1968 until I left RI in 1974. Orlando had Zeta7. One of the best items I have ever purchased, and thanks to my father's advice) with my High School graduation money was a German-made "Grundig" FM radio. It cost about $200 then in 1969. (it worked perfectly up to the year 1990). My journey of listening to progressive rock began when I heard three albums in 1967 at Mike and Carol Hughes's house with Mike Morry on Friday afternoons after school. John Hughes, their older brother, had purchased the three albums. These three albums did the job of turning me away from the top 40 radio forever. The records were Cream -"Disraeli Gears", "The Doors", and The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Are You Experienced"-('You will never listen to surf music again') ----> My music collection as of Monday 03-25-2024 <---- I have over 300 vinyl LPs of progressive rock—about 52 DVDs and VHS tapes of the best live rock concerts.
