Richard's Story

Life My son Rick is in the Navy serving on subs. He's over 21, earned his Dolphines on his first deployment which I had the pleasure to pin on him with his skipper during a Tiger cruise. He has made the Navy a career and continues to advance in rank and experience. He is supported by his wife, Kara. I am blessed with two grand daughters and a grand son. My daughter Renne is also over 21 and spent a year of her life in South Africa doing missionary work. She and I celebrated her 24th birthday in Humansdorp, South Africa during a visit. She brought the Love of/for God to the natives but helped to remove the bias and distrust created during the apartied era. Upon her return, Renne is working at the Youth Center here in Puyallup which provides a safe place for them to gather. I am VERY proud of both my kids. They are doing what they want to do and I believe that it is a great success for a single parent. My Job I am now retired. After 44 years, primarily in flight test on the aircraft and flight test systems. Used to work on first of a kind aircraft or aircraft systems/designs before they are certified for public/military use. No two days were the same and our goal is to make aircraft safer, better, economical and more comfortable for the flying public and our people in uniform. This job sometimes took me out of the country or into other States. College During my time at South Seattle Community College, I was working full time night shift plus overtime during the week and week ends and pulling a full credit load. The goal at first was to get the Federal license for Airframe and Power Plant ( A&P ) but once those goals were realised, it was a small jump to the Associate in Applied Science in Aeronautical Technology ( AAS ). What I remember about school is the thrill of learning new ideas and how little sleep was gotten. As I am older now, I don't believe that I'd do that again in the same way. Workplace Started working for the company right out of High School. Worked a year before the Dr...Expand for more
aft caught up to me. Volunteered for the Navy and served 4 Years. Trained in Aviation Electronics and served as an Aviation Fire Control Technition with Fighter Squadron 92 which made two deployements to Viet Nam aboard the USS America and USS constellation. Upon discharge in 1972, returned to work. Position titles held from 1967 to present were ; Dispatch Clerk, Expiditer, Research Electrician, Avionics Technition, Aircraft Electrician, Lead Aircraft Electrician, Aviation Maintenance Technician. Different environments and areas of the company that I've worked are Production, Factory ( Assembly ), Preflight, Delivery, Flight Test, Training. Travel has been part of the package with the Navy and the Company. It has taken me around the world 5 times both by way of sea and air. Some 24+ countries and 13+ States. Places that I had never dreamed I'd see let alone be there when I was in High School. Aircraft worked were: F-4B/J, 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, E-3, KE-3, P-3, C-32, C-40, and helped restore the only existing flying 307 and 367-80 for the Dulles Museum. Military After Boot Camp in San Diego, was ordered to NATTC Memphis, Tenn. for training in Electronics. Completed Fast track program and attended "A" School for Aviation Fire Control. Next assignment was NAS Mirimar, San Diego assigned to VF-121 for more training on F-4B, F-4J aircraft and then assigned to fighter squadron VF-92 ( F-4J's ), part of CAG9 ( Carrier Air Group ). Made two Westpacs to Vietnam, first aboard USS America CVA66 ( 69-70 ) and then USS Constellation CVA64 with a 3 month extended tour ( 71-72 ). I was honorably discharged in 1972 after 4 years service. Three years before I retired, it came to my attention that There were several service awards that did not show on my discharge papers. With the help of Congressman Heck and his Veteran service staff, The Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, South Korean Service Award, Viet Nam Gallantry w/Palm and Frame and a Silver Star for my Viet Nam Service Award. 42 years after the fact.
