Richard's Story

As I recall I was an embarrassingly avid Elvis fan in grade school, did little in high school other than afternoon jobs, caught the academic fever in college and wound up with a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a 30 year career as a college professor. I taught at SIU-Carbondale and then in the Massachusetts State College system. Ten years ago I took an early retirement and moved to Sarasota, FL. Good move:I should have done that earlier. Along the way I became a columnist for computer and investment magazines, a professional glamor photographer, and am currently working on two books. I enjoyed Cook Elementary, had a beautiful girlfriend named Bobbie Stuckey, and used to compete with Bill Naff for who could finish their math quizes ...Expand for more
first. If people from Calumet High School remember me at all, it will be for the stunt of bring the lunchroom to a halt one day (1961) by hiding in a garbage can and scaring people about to dump their trash in the can. It got out of hand and I got escorted out of school. I started college at Lincoln College in Lincoln, IL and two professors, Roger Cushman and Thomas Musser lit my academic fire and changed my life. From there I went NIU-Dekalb where I organized Vietnam War protests, incurring the curiosity of the FBI and the enmity of the local police. After a brief stint teaching junior college in Centralia, IL, I went into the doctoral program at SIU. Carbondale was wonderful. I hated to leave when I finished my degree.
