Richard's Story
After leaving high school, I joined the aarmy, went to Germany for 2 years. I then went to the US Army helicopter flight training school. I graduated there as a helicopter pilot. My first assignment was as a Medevac pilot in the Republic of Panama. There I met my future wife (Rita Marie), she was born in VA, but moved to Panama when she was 6. After 2 years, I was reassigned to FT Rucker, Al as an Instructor Pilot, teaching new pilots. I stayed there until October 1987, when I got out of the army, however, I took a civil service job, at the same place doing the same thing I was doing when I was in the army. I also joined the Alabama National Guard, there I held many positions (Flight Instructor, Instrument examiner, Safety Officer and Maintenance Test Pilot. I was qualified to operate UH-1 Hueys, OH-58 Kiowas and CH...Expand for more
-47 Chinook helicpters. In January 0f 2004, my unit and I was activated to go to Afghanistan for 12 months (worst year of my life). While in Afghanistan I got pretty sick, still performing flight duties. I remained sick (still) and was medically discharged and permenantly grounded from flying, so now I am totally retired, except for going to doctors appointments. I still live near FT Rucker, Al, with my wife and daughter (senior in high school), but we also have another house in Melbourne Florida, where we will be spending more time. Hope everyone is well. Believe it or not, it was Jim Dubee, he inspired me to be a pilot and I think I learned a lot from him, even though I was never a good student.
My current age is 52. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong.
