Richard's Story

A distant cousin of mine once wrote: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways" This cousin was Elizabeth Barrett Browning and from her I fear I have found a love for writing early which continues today. Being a child of middle class America, I attended Westshore School, Wilson Junior High and eventually four years at Plant. No, I did not fail, but the product of the only freshman class in those days. My four years at Plant left lasting friendships as I was not a football great like my best friend Bobby Burke or an accomplished businessman like another friend Sam Fonte but an ordinary young man living an extraordinary life. Angela Bryant honored me by being my date for the 1954 Turkey Day Game and later the Pantherilla Dance. She was chosen as 'Class Most Sincere' and friends, I promise, she was just that, a lovely person and she is sorely missed now. I go back to Ms. Browning's words, "Let me count the ways", for they are many. How Coach Lorenzo strived to make men out of us boys, even though we weighed less than a kilo of guts and fortitude, yet it took him but a few years to produce a championship team. That scrappy Mrs. Jimenez who threatened to jump from the first floor window of her classroom if we bungling students could not conjugate the verb of choice in Spanish. For those who may have forgotten, she did! Leaving Plant to take on the task of defender of our country and wearing the uniform of the United States Navy, along with Bobby Burke, David Bozeman and Charles Townsend of our ranks was at first a somewhat formable task. But the lessons we learned at Plant carried us through and led to various military adventures, for which each of us have tales to tell. R. A. Stroud, why didn't I take the summer job your Dad offered with the Gulf Oil bunch and not go off to foreign wars, life perhaps would have been much simpler? Such is life! After the military, I found a bride, a Pantherette herself and graduate of the class of 1959. The belle whom I married was Sandra Rawlings and she and I were honored to bear three children, two daughters and a son, which themselves have led to three lovely grand daughters, one a second generation BullDawg. One Daughter went on to represent Tallahassee in the Miss Florida USA contest. Ah...Expand for more
is there any greater joy than to see our children achieve things we only dreamed of ? NO! I had no interest in competing in any Miss Anything pagents...that was but a figure of speech! For any whom may wonder, yes I had a somewhat creditable career in Plastic Design Engineering. After six years of being one of those folks that kept your lights burning brightly as an employee of Tampa Electric and playing both soft ball and baseball for that bunch of 'yellow hardhats', there were even more challenging things I longed for. My bride, being from Georgia suggested, you know how brides can suggest something, we move to Georgia to allow her to be near her family again. Okay, no problem, I accepted employment with Westclox and for fourteen years designed electric alarm clocks for you who can't awaken when the cock crows! I have to wonder how many have cursed me (that unidentified cause for the dreaded buzz' at 6:00 AM to arouse them). I'm sorry, it was just a job. At some point I had a need for greater things, sooooooo I began the challenge in the halls of the University of Georgia in Athens to gain a degree in Psychology and eventually ply my trade in the field of mental health. The challenge of studies at Georgia was easy as I graduated cum laude with a GPA of 3.59! Sadly, my bride and I parted ways just prior to my acceptance to the U. of South Florida to achieve the PhD in Clinical Psychology. With a BA in Psychology and three children who depend on your support, there is no way to enter into grad school. Careers never over weigh parental responsibilities! Take that to the bank pard! Yeah, I have hanging in my closet a Georgia Letter Jacket for being Student Manager of the Wrestling Team of 1976-1977 and for that I am truly proud. A Bulldawg through and through. So, my career ended with meaningful years in both product and tool design in the Plastic Industry. Hey, one of my projects was for a kidney dialysis tube to help patients survive , so it wasn't all a loss! If you are like me, Plant offered a stepping stone into life as well as a treasure trove of friendships of which today I still relish. Ernie Moya, you naughty boy, still smoking I see. That's gonna stunt your growth son!! Best wishes to my fellow Panthers, Richard
