Richard's Story

Can there even be any question or doubt that Harry Smith has some uncanny ability to get us up before 5:00 am to be at school by 6:00 am?. You think he had friends here or something! They couldn't get us to come to school by 8:00 when we had to be there, let alone get here by 6:00 am to do a TV show with him. Heck, they are going to think that we actually like him, and, of course, they will be right, because we do. I still may be a little crazy at times, but, I am not a full fledged psycho-path. Well, not yet. This Bulletin Board and messaging system labeled me as the organizer, and I want it to be clear to everyone, that I surely was not, and cannot take any of the credit for such a wonderful event. I was happy to be able to be a part of it. It was indeed an honor and a pleasure to recognize a mutual friend and classmate, like our friend Harry Smith. Sarah Boxer of CBS, and Scott Fraser, the Producer, were responsible for planning and organizing this fun-filled event. Some of us just helped spread the word. This "Classmates" database program labels anybody who facilitates a message or bulletin as the organizer. I felt I needed to make a clarification statement about this, just out of respect for all the others involved, and because it made me feel uncomfortable. There were others who worked on this before this week, such as, Marilyn Rae, Donna Nigohosian, Jerry Fritz, Wayne Brumm, Len Rompca, Dick Weber, Ron Devalk, Kathy Aloia, Bob Collins, and many others, who deserve special recognition. ank Paul Carter and his brother Ken, who inquired through my brother Peter about the event. Peter and I knew nothing about anything as of noon Friday, 5/2/08. On their behalf and my own, I did make some inquiries, and called Bob Collins office. Bob was on vacation in Hawaii, but, many thanks to his secretary, who got in touch with Donna Nighosian Magro. Donna then called me and filled me in with great detail. It was neat to see the expressions of surprise and joy on Harry's face at seeing all of his many friends and family who gathered here and in New York for the fun and festivities. It was very cool, and very special to have our school recognized and viewed by millions acrosss the country. I surely will never forget the great experience and fun we had on May 6, 2008. Donna and I decided to use this event as the Kickoff for our 40th Reunion Celebration. I talked it over with Cheryl Ridder Woldhuis, Bud Jenkins, Bonny Van Kley O'Conner, Chris Jacobs Burr, and Dave Kats, and we decided then and there that we were all committed to organizing the Reunion. Many good people were added to the committee, both locally and from remote locations, who contributed much to the success of the planning and the search for our classmates that stretched around the world. We now can look forward to spending a big weekend in Lansing with our friends this coming June 26-28, 2009. Many of you have never been to one of our Reunions, and some have not seen anybody from school for 40 years. Hope all of our classmates will join us.
