Richard Langdon:

CLASS OF 1975
El monte, CA

Richard's Story

Life. Who would've thought that a half-stoned, rock-n-rollin', long-haired, slacker turned out to be a Real American Hero? I was probably the most surprised of all, but it turned out to be true. Here's a brief recap... I left EMHS after my second year in 1973. I was bored and frustrated because I realized that I wasn't learning anything that I didn't already know. My home life was pretty frustrating, too. I left home, found some work, and saved up some money for college. I discovered that getting into most any university was far more difficult than I anticipated. I had a GED that boasted a 97 percentile, but my grades in EMHS weren't very impressive (slacker!), and I was still too young to be accepted at most colleges (I was only 17). So, I joined the USArmy. Surprisingly, that was a great choice, though I had my doubts at the time. Being a volunteer enlistee, I had my choice of careers, so I chose to be a Medic. I breezed through Basic Training because I was in fairly good physical condition and was highly motivated. The real shocker came when I entered Medic training at Ft Sam Houston, in San Antonio, TX. I not only came out at the top of my class, but I ended up being the class tutor. My efforts pushed the average test scores of my entire training cycle to the highest recorded in several years. I was then assigned to duty in Europe with the 3rd Inf Div, based in Kitzingen, Germany. I got lucky when a slot opened in the 3rd Combat Aviation Battalion just before I arrived. I became a Flight Medic in a medical evacuation platoon, also known as a "Dustoff" unit. I served for 2 years there before being sent back to the States. I continued my training and eventually achieved the highest levels possible in several specialized fields in Military Medicine. When I was Honorably Discharged in 1984, I continued both my public service as a Paramedic/Firefighter and education at the University of Texas. I lived and worked in the San Antonio area for another 20 years, positively impacting the lives of many hundreds of people during their most desperate times. I call it "My Warzone Years" and I did my best to make things better in the name of the greater good. I never considered myself a "hero" by any means, but I was called this by many. I was just...Expand for more
doing my job and trying to make a difference. I worked my a$$ off for peanuts (I've never been one of those $100k+ over-achievers), but I have saved the lives of hundreds of people...and that made me successful in a different way. "Never equate affluence with success". I recently retired from public service and moved to a small town in Central Texas called Fredericksburg. It's a very nice, quiet, pretty little town with a simple kind of lifestyle; one that I have craved for all my life. Unfortunately, public service took it's toll on me, physically. The numerous stress-fractures, herniated disks, and arthritis is pretty bad and it makes moving about difficult, but I manage ok. The constant exposure to smoke, chemicals, asbestos, and Lord Knows What Else has reduced my lung capacity to about 50% of normal...but I deal with it. I feel that I made my positive contribution to our society. I paid my dues. Now, it's time for me. But never in my wildest dreams would have thought that my life would have come to this. I now work as a Produce Manager in the local grocery store. Easy job, no brainer, I'm not responsible for someone else's life, hours are good, and the pay is decent. I still get to meet and talk with a large variety of interesting people and I've made a lot of friends here. I have a delightful, talented, and intelligent wife of 18 years named Lorraine who is also very lovely (A real hottie!). I also have a (too) smart (and very spoiled) mixed Golden Lab/Chow dog named Riley; both of whom demand most all of my attention when I'm at home. I have two grown daughters, both of whom I am very proud of. I have enough time on hand to explore the Internet to broaden my horizons and satisfy my curiosities even more...online gaming is also fun! I can now spend more quality time with those I love and are most dear to my heart. I also like to tend to my plants and lawn. I take care of my "Honey-doo" list...at least the parts that I can't get away with ;). I've been recently working on writing one (or maybe several) books related to some key events in my life and the insights that I have gained from them; either as fictionalization of real events or maybe an autobiography. It's a work in progress. Wish me luck! Life is good! How is your's?
