Stuart's Story

Hello Visitors! I got to this website by Gary Mills who got a hold of my e-mail and made contact. So, the quick scoop for those who are interested: I joined the Navy in my junior year at Millbrook and went to basic at the end of our senior summer. I made a conscious decision when I got on the plane to quit screwin' around and have manged to make it to 41 in fair shape. I graduated from the Navy Nuclear Engineering program and traveled the world on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). After a NORPAC (Northern Pacific), a WESTPAC (Western Pacific) and a World Cruise (departed Alameda, CA and arrived Norfolk, VA, the long way!) we dry docked in Newport News, VA, in 1990. In 1991 I was drawn by some force into the local Army recruiter's office and soon found myself low crawling through a sand pit in Warrant Officer Candidate School on my way to flight school. A year later I was flying UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters for the 101st Airborne Division. I later completed the UH-60 Test Pilot course, followed by a year in Honduras and a subsequent assignment with the 101st. By then I was married and had a daughter on the way so put in my papers and headed for the airlines. I did not want to stop serving in the military so the day after I got off of active duty I signed in the the Kentucky Army National Guard. That was one of the smartest things I've ever done. I flew jets for Comair full time and performed PIC (Pilot in Command) duties for the guard part time until September 2004 when I took military leave from Comair to deploy to Balad, Iraq. I found that I missed being full time military and, after returning in November 2005, I put in a packet to return to active duty. Fortunately, a full time, or AGR (Active Guard / Reserve) position opened up in the KY Guard and I now fly one of the ugliest aircraft in the Army inventory, the C23 Sherpa. On 01 January 2007 I had sandy boots for a second time (it was a warm 120 degrees when when got off the plane and ...Expand for more
I felt like I'd only been gone a week!) This time would be a little easier. The first time over there we flew in full body armor at about 50-70 feet AHO (Above The Highest Obstacle) and 120-140 knots. It was often 130 degrees or better in the cockpit and we were constantly looking for the enemy ('cause they were constantly looking for us!) This time was all high altitude (10 to 14 thousand feet, not REAL high!) at night for better performance and lower threat. While the first deployment was full of excitement and tension, this one was uneventful with one sad exception. My mother passed away on 20 November 2007 and I returned home on emergency leave two days later. That pretty much brings me to the present: I am a CW4 (Chief Warrant Officer) in the Kentucky Army National Guard flying fixed wing aircraft. I have a wife and three kids. Baelyn is 8, Kaeley is 6 and my parents revenge, Spencer, is a new 4 (but he looks 5 since he is only a few pounds shy of Kaeley!) We live in Lexington, KY, and while my drive to work in Frankfort is about 50 minutes I have some of the most beautiful countryside to drive through. Horse farms are everywhere and the roads are lined with stone walls built before the Civil War. My wife, Monica, is a RN but currently stays home to take care of the kids. I have a 2000 Harley that I just took to Deals Gap, NC, to "Slay the Dragon" and am looking forward to riding to Milwaukee in August for the 105th Harley-Davidson Anniversary celebration (we scored tickets to Bruce Springstein!) I take life a bit more seriously than I did at Millbrook, which explains why I am still breathing, and I look forward to retiring in 4 years and moving back the other direction just a little. I have a plan for a unique business that caters to bikers and look forward to working for myself until I get tired of working all together. Then I want to do some traveling in sandals instead of boots! And that's the short of it. It's a blessed life!
