Richard's Story

Life The journey from BHS took me through my B.A, M.A.and Ph.D., teaching at five universities along the way. I was a professor in Hawaii for ten years and have been a professor at California State University since 1979. I am a licensed therapist and have businesses in real estate and classic car restoration. A highlight was selling two classic Jaguars to Warner Bros.for a film. I have traveled within the U.S.,especially Alaska, and to a number of foreign countries. The best trip was 6 weeks in the British Isles where, in Ireland, I found ten new cousins and their families. This happened after asking two ladies in the village's only pub if they knew any people on my ancestors list. Two family members emigrated to Australia, and we spent six weeks on a trip to the South seas including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti right after the reunion. I continued my music interest through college where I became a DJ and had several groups, and I still find time for this interest. Along with travel, classic cars, music and genealogy, photography is a favorite interest. I reconnected with and married my former high school sweetheart; we have eight daughters, six grandsons and seven granddaughters. Four live in California and one each in Portland OR, Roanoke, Orlando and Pittsburgh. For years we have summered in New England during July and August at the lake in New Hampshire, and for several years we have spent the summer in the mountains of North Carolina. We have our home in California but still own the family home in Belmont, complete with our original phone number! The class reunion was absolutely great. The committee did a fantastic job in putting it together. It was fascinating to see classmates after such long time and hear all about how they have spent the last half century. Right after the reunion we left on a 6 week trip to the South Seas and visited a number of exotic and interesting places. We especially liked Tahiti, Fiji, Australia and the South Island of New Zealand including the "middle earth" hobbit parts and the rain forests. So it's been a busy Fall season. We went back to Ireland for 2 months in 2014 to see the 10 cousins and t...Expand for more
heir families that I discovered doing my family research. They invited me for the wedding of one of their children. This was my first Irish wedding and it was great. The celebration went on for three days including time in those great old venues we see on travel shows. We traveled around the north and west of Ireland including visiting fascinating museums on the history of the people of Ireland and staying in several of great castles steeped in history. Scandinavia is in our plans including taking the train in Norway to the arctic circle. We took a great trip in the Fall of 2015 around the Northwest states and Canada. We spent Christmas, 2015, in Yosemite. In March, 2016, we went to Iceland to see the Northern lights. Nature cooperated and we saw a fantastic display. We enjoyed Reykjavik and the people in Iceland. It was interesting to see restaurant menus featuring whale and puffin dishes--really! In 2018 we spent 6 weeks in Ireland, England, Shetland Island, Scotland and Norway during which we saw all the major fjords with those great villages and as a special treat we were at the famous rock from which Tom Cruise dangled after the helicopter crash in Mission Impossible: Fallout. Each time we are in the British Isles we stay in some castles, This time we stayed in Cabra Castle. We returned to Newport, RI for my niece's wedding and then back to Arlington and Loon Mountain for family time. After this month and a half we returned to the coast of California. We flip houses and had to finish one project. We just returned from our May, 2019 anniversary vacation in Alaska and are planning a trip in the Fall to the rocky mountains. We have 2 new grandchildren born to twin sisters just weeks apart!! They are married to men who were best friends since early childhood. Another grandchild, another girl, is due in early January, 2020. The tenth grandchild is here! Other than that, all is well.! Now in 2021 we have 12 grand children, with the 13th on the way, and one great grandchild! We had a great family gathering at a large cabin in the North Carolina mountains. The covid19 has kept us close to home and staying very careful . I hope to attend the 60th reunion!
