Richard's Story

As some may remember, I joined the Navy Reserve while in high school. After graduation I attended the University of Massachusetts. While there I attended Officer Candidate School and upon graduation with a BS in Chemical Engineering, I was commishioned as an Ensign and stationed at Rota Spain for three years. While stationed in Spain, I married a Springfield girl that I met while at UMass and we have been married for alsmost 44 years now. We have two daughters, one in Connecticut and one in California. When I returned from active duty, I remained in the reserves and drilled in Springfield, Westover, Worchester, Whitestone NY and Freeport NY. I retired as a Commander in 1986. After active duty I worked at Moore Company in Springfield for 6 years as both hourly and management. We lived for a short time in West Springfield and eventually bought a house in 16 Acres where we lived from 1973 until 1986. In 1978 I went to work for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford as a Manufacturing Engineer. I became a Manager in 1983. In 1986 I took a 3 year rotational assignment at the West Palm Beach Florida plant. Due to some organizational changes, the nature of my assignment got lost and I stayed in Florida for 13 years. Both my daughters grew up as Floridians and my older one attended college in Florida. I returned...Expand for more
to Connecticut in 1999 and worked mostly out of East Hartford and a little out of Middletown. We settled in Marlborough CT in 1999. In 2010 we moved to Lebanon, where we live now. My time at P&W was entirely spent as part of Manufacturing. I was a manufacturing engineer, a capital equipment procurement engineer, a manufacturing engineering manager and the majority of my career I spent with various titles that all were really a manufacturing program manager. I led teams that transitioned the last three military fighter engines from development into production. Between the military, work, and family travel I have had the opportunity to visit all of the 48 contiguous states, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, The Neatherlands, Belgium, Germany. Morocco, France and a number of Caribbean Islands. I retired from P&W in 2011. I did some consulting work for the next year and a half until the end of 2012 and am now fully retired and am enjoyng the our home and 5 acres of land out in the farmlands. We have owned horses since 1996 and this keeps my wife and daughter busy. We also have two cats and two dogs that keep me busy. Recently moved to an even smaller town in the farmlands, Belwood North Carolina with 16 acres of land. Recently finished a new barn connected to 10 acres of pasture.
