Richard's Story
Life
I graduated from The University of Mass.-Amherst in 1966 with a major in Policyical Science/International Relations. I then went on to Salem State University, graduating in 1968 with a major in Non-Western Studies. I continued post graduate work there in Counseling and Psychology. I have been married since 1972 and have two daughters, Jenny and Laura. Jenny is the oldest and is a graphic designer. She is married and has one son, Liam. Her husband is a software engineer. Jenny and family live in Reading, MA. Laura is a Child and Family Therapist. Laura married a man from Dundalk Ireland. We have spent a lot of time in Ireland since the early 1980's, touring and visiting with my Irish relatives. I think Laura fell in the love with the accent as well as the culture. I claimed my Irish citizenship in 1984 and enjoy travelling with an EU passport so I do not have to wait in immigration or customs lines. Laura and Kevin live in our in-law apartment here in Boxford, MA.
I got to go back to Burlington when I turned 60 (how time files). My family had a surprise party for me at the Burlington Country Club. That brought back an amazing number of memories of my high school summers swimming in the club's pool.
Workplace
My professional life has been quite rewarding. I taught history and psychology at Masconomet Regional High School beginning in 1967. Masconomet is located in Boxford where I live and also covers the towns of M...Expand for more
iddleton and Topsfield. I was the Chairman of the Social Studies Department (7-12) for 12 years and then Director of Guidance, Health Education, and Health Services at Masconomet from 2006-2008. I retired from Masconomet in June of 2008, after 41 years of service. Not going into full retirement, I joined the faculty in the School of Education at Merrimack College in the summer of 2008 and remain as an Adjunct Professor. I also did a stint as President of the Mass. Council for the Social Studies, the professional organization of social studies teachers in Massachusetts. In this role, I was pleasantly surprised to meet Sandy Sharpe Couture who was working as an interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village.
Psychology has become my love. I have worked part-time as a therapist since 1975, even doing a three year stint in prison (as a prison psychologist). In the summers of 2005 and 2006, I worked as the Program Chair for the Society of General Psychology of the American Psychological Association at their annual conventions. During 2007 and 2008 I served a term of office as Secretary-Treasurer of The Society of General Psychology.
Military
I was in the Air Force Reserves, stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford from 1968 - 1972 as an Operating Room Technician/ Supervisor. I would have stayed on as I was being promoted to the position of Unit Commander in 1972, but my unit was deactivated as the Vietnam War was winding down.
