Richard's Story
Military
Entered the military in Oct. 1963. Following my basic training I was stationed at Ft. Polk, La. for advanced Infantry training and subsequently work as a Fort Polk, Military Police Laison working out of the Stockagde. Then to Korea for approx. 14 months with the 32nd infantry. Attended a couip[le weeks of Counter Guirella Warfare training and 7th InfantryDiv. Non-Commisioned Officer School while there .Following Kpres, was stationed at Ft Hood. Texas. While at Ft. Hood, 1st Armored Div. we had the opportunity to work with the first group of new recruits. Ft. Hood became a training facility for new members of the Army. attended the 4th Army Non-Commisioned Officers School for 6 weeks, graduating 2nd in class.
Following my stent in Texas, I spent time at Ft. Benning and two other locations in Ga. Camp Darby, Camp Rogers then one in Florida, Eglin AF Base, for Ranger training. I was sent to Vietnam where I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Div., "C" Co., 1/16th Infantry Rangers. After serving approx. 8 1/2 months in Vietnam I was wounded, April 3, 1967 and Med Evac. to Japan. Following a month at Camp Zama Army Medical Ctr., Honshu, Japan, I was sent to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Wash., D.C. Was there from May 5, 1968 until Oct 30th, 1968, then, placed on temporary retirement with full 20 year benefits, due to disability, with the rank of Staff Sgt.. Fully retired in March 31,1971.
