Richard's Story
After high school, I joined the Coast Guard, wanting to achieve a goal of being someone worth something. High school insecurities and all. After two years on a ship that took me through Central and South America, I was stationed in Monterey and rose in the ranks. I racked up numbers that at the time had me believe 'challenge complete.' I rescued several hundred people, Was directly responsible for saving the lives of over twenty people--and two dogs, This included being nominated for the Coast Guard medal of heroism for saving a family and my crew while my boat lost power in storm waves off a rocky coast. I was also involved in counter-smuggling
After discharge and disgruntled about being a poorly treated veteran, I wandered through over two dozen jobs including commercial diver, diver for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, sales positions, service tech for an industrial company, R & D tech. Various customer service jobs. Stockbroker. Account executive for a financial firm, Repo man. Fencing coach, consultant for mercenaries and international commodity shippers. Naturalist guide, construction, technical and writing and other positions.
During these times, I managed to botch up a couple marriages and numerous relationships. A major plus is two fine so...Expand for more
ns, one of which became a fifth-generation veteran.
My current incarnation is that of US Forest Service engineer on the Los Padres National Forest in California. I'm the behind-the-scenes guy insuring that the infrastructure, roads, bridges, dams, buildings is in reasonable condition. I also work on fires running supplies from base camp to the men and women on the lines. There's been times when flames literally licked the side of my truck.
I love adventure and continue scuba diving with currently over 4,500 dives, outdoorsy stuff, am a competent participant in combat shooting competitions and writer with one book published this year--'A Deadly Balance' about an Army Special Forces sniper who acquires the ability to heal any wound or illness, a post-apolitical novel set in Santa Barbara, coming out in the winter of 22, two more next year including a series based on my experiences with mercenaries and smugglers.
Back in the 1970's, my grandfather stated a day before he passed away, "I've lived a good life. A full life." I took this to heart and promised myself that no matter when my time arrived, I'd be able to say the same thing. I've strived to be 'the good guy' and feel that I can combine this with, 'I've lived a good life and a full life.'
