Richard's Story
Life (updated 4/6/2016)
I attended four high schools from my sophomore through senior years. The first, last, and best was Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, NY. I was a pretty lost young man. I haven't changed much in that respect. I met and married Donna Holub, from Amityville, NY, while I was in grad school (physics) and she was an undergrad at Harpur College (now Binghamton U). Somehow Donna has survived my moods for 50 years. (We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary July 11, 2015. I gifted Donna a Purple Heart.) I worked as an engineer in flight simulation for 35 years--eight years in Binghamton, NY and 28 years at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. Really loved flight simulation technology. Retired from federal civil service in 2001. We have two children, Jennifer, formerly a nurse, and Chris, a physics Ph.D and senior atmospheric science researcher at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. consin Gretchen is now an assistant professor at CSU. Chris and Gretchen have a beautiful daughter, Lyla Marie O'Dell, born Jun 2008. Their son, Liam Richard O'Dell, was born Sep 2010. Our children's childhood was the happiest part of my life...and Donna's. Donna and I moved permanently to Brevard County, Florida in 2012. We purchased another condo in Indian Harbour Beach...a six minute walk from Jennifer's condo. I enjoy Concept 2 rowing, strength training, playing bridge, movies, reading, the Internet, and (I guiltily admit) television. I became a daily runner in 1978 but, unfortunately, inoperable foot problems ended that passion a few years ago. I enjoy corresponding with old friends: rwalterodell(at)gmail(dot)com. Please send me an email. I promise to reply. I become a little more lonely with each passing birthday. I attended my HS class's 50th reunion (August 2008) in Watertown, NY. It was a truly joyous occasion and we all became 17 years old again for a couple of days. At least in spirit.
