Richard's Story

After High School I enlisted in the Air Force. After basic training I was sent to missile tech school and then to Vandenberg AFB California. .. That was a tough school, after which I was sent to the Cape in Florida for 9 months for Launch Control school. That was great duty. I was unaware at the time, that I was in-fact living part of history being involved in space exploration and the development of rocket power. I spent 4 additional years in the Air Force and during that time was injured on one of the Atlas ICBM launch complexes at Vandenberg AFB. I recovered with a slight disability but that did not slow my desire to get my pilots license with the base Aero club.. When it was time to reenlist I was cautioned to consider my decision as my disability, regardless of how minor may slow my advancement in rank. I had wanted to make the Air Force my career. At that point I returned to civilian life in Philadelphia. When one door is closed usually another will open. I went to work for several engineering firms, however, they were office (confining/boring) 9 - 5 positions. An acquaintance of mine contacted me and asked if I would be interested going to work as a Safety Engineer for an insurance company. I interview for the position and was hired. That is the career field I have been in from that time on. During that same time period I met and married Joan, the present lady and soul mate I still live with. We ha...Expand for more
d two children Scott and Joy and moved frequently to other areas of the country until we landed in the Chicago area in the mid 1970's. We remained there for 35 years. Joan, a Paralegal, went to work in a law firm and I continued working in the Risk Management/Safety area until the mid 1980's when I formed my own Risk Management consulting company specializing in Risk Management issues. My company was extremely successful and I retired 2003. I had a heart attack in 1988 and wanted to take it easy. Over the years I have always been an outdoors person and did a lot of hunting and fishing. My wife and I have traveled worldwide on camera and African Safaris. . We have been to Africa on several Hunting and Camera Safaris.. I shoot Sporting Clay's competitively which also takes us to many areas of our country, Europe and Middle East. I am very active with Quail Creek Plantation Sporting Clay's and Hunt Club. One of the activities I enjoy the most is being a volunteer coach and instructor with Young Guns (ages 9 -18). They learn very quickly and do very well in competition. . We retired to Florida, Port St. Lucie, in 2003 and are enjoying our retirement. I still do some consulting work in the Chicago area as I have maintained my networking efforts. Our Son is a Battalion Chief of a Fire Dept., our daughter recently moved from the Chicago area with our 2 granddaughters, Amanda 20, and Jordan 14 to Phoenix Arizona.
