Richard's Story
Hello to anyone from JMH 78' and 79'. Most of you don't know me because I graduated in 78' a year early. I was a pretty good student in JH (Shuler) but got off trac and screwed around 10th and 12th. I played trombone in The Stage Band and Marching band (I had potential but was not serious - a BIG regret). I dated Karen Kuhar in JH and Mary Beth Cooney in HS, I have fond memories of them both and sure hope life was good to them. I like this web site but only paid for it one time a few yrs ago when I was living in San Antonio, TX - found my old friend Bill Fleig and we talk on email now and again. After I graduated I joined the Air Force (how I lost Mary Beth) and spent 8 years as a medic - working mostly in ICU and Aeromedical Evacuation, (had my 15 min of fame) on the national news once during the Grenada conflict evacuating injured 82nd Air Borne. In those 8 years I became a diligent worker but still screwed around off duty. I got an Honorable Discharge in 86' and got married to my wife Jennifer (22yrs now). I earned a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Wright State University in 91' and went back in the Air Force where I spent another 15 yrs rising in the ranks to Major before retiring in June of 06'. I have 3 children, my oldest son is an Architect in Detroit (he and his wife gave us 2 grand kids and another due in July). My middle son is a Cadet at the USAF Academy in Colorado, and my daughter will graduate from HS next week ! - Oh by the way we live in Eagle River, Alaska (about 13 miles North of Anchorage). My wife Jennifer retired from the Air Force Reserves, she's a Nurse Pactitioner and works for a dialysis firm. I'm enjoying my retirement more and just work a couple days a week in the Recovery Room at Alaska Regional Hospital - after so many years of being in charge of people and projects in the Air Force I LOVE just going to work and taking care of patients - no more management...Expand for more
, no more checking boxes, and no more ladder climbing for me. I spend my free time with my wife and daughter. I love Alaska and spend as much time out in the bush as possible trapping, fishing, hiking, camping, and some taxidermy too. I have spent my whole life collecting music and my favorite hobby is making compilation recordings - now that I am retired I'm really enjoying that. Now closing in on 48yrs old I've done pretty well for myself but could have done much better had I not screwed around in HS. I have not lived in Cleveland since 1978 but all of my family do, so I've been flying back and forth from all over the country for 30yrs now - WOW that sounds OLD. The city has had some ups and downs but I find it to be so much nicer now and love going to the RHOF and downtown area. I always try to make a drive thru the valley and almost every trip home I will try to drive up around JMH and past Shuler and old friends houses - have become an old sentimental fool. You miss what you don't have. I regret graduating early as I lost contact with almost all the kids I spent years with at McKinley, Hawthore, and Shuler but I have always been the impatient type - never sit still for long - somewhere to go and stuff to do. I will be moving back down to the lower 48 in Spring/Summer 09' but not sure where yet. My youngest wants to go to Wright State like her Dad so maybe the Dayton area. I follow the Browns religiously - nothing better than watching sports and seeing shots of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. I am so NOT the person I was in HS but I guess none of us are anymore - time changes everthing. I don't know when the reunion is - never made one yet and I'm pretty far away this time, might be best to hit the 79' crowd next year. Good thinking about things - remembering people, places, and times. Good health to you all and good night from Alaska, Land of the mid-night sun. Rick Shea
