Richard's Story

Hi there, Though I only have been able to keep up with a few classmates over the years, I often smile or laugh out loud when remembering moments spent with many of you. I hope life has been as kind, as interesting, and as meaningful for you. I'll add a 2015 update here and leave the notes from 2010 below. I'm still traveling and consulting, just billing fewer hours since all four of our boys are now college graduates. James Madison University has plans for my property, so I am considering where I'll live next. My boys are spreading out: Jonathan is in Blacksburg, Jason is in Sydney, Jeremy is in New Orleans and Justin is deciding on either Richmond or DC. As long as I'm within an hour of an airport, I can settle where I like. I love the mountains and the ocean so I'm considering places where I can have both. Jeremy made me a grandfather in June of 2014 when his daughter Jewell was born. This December she will become a big sister to my second granddaughter. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Love it. Looking forward to the next reunion. _____________________________________________________________________________________ My wife, Jewell, and I moved from out in the county into Harrisonburg about six years ago. Sad to say Jewell passed away two years ago this past Christmas (back in 2007). That made for the longest two years of my life, but I'm doing better now. I live next to the JMU Arboretum -- beautiful most of the year with Dogwoods, American Red Buds, Bradford Pear trees, pine trees, giant maples and lots of flowers. My oldest son, Jonathan, was discharged from the Navy last year and now is in college studying Virology. He's been to Europe, the Middle East and South America. Jason took a year off from school to work as a cameraman at the local TV station, traveled to South America to serve as a clown with Patch Adams in childrens' hospitals ...Expand for more
last year and now he is studying Anthropology at Appalachian State in NC. Jeremy is a Young Life Leader in Shenandoah County and also is now a professional musician while completing his studies at JMU to become a Special Ed teacher. Justin, the eleventh grader, is on the Harrisonburg High School Tennis Team, undefeated in singles and doubles in the '09 season, active with Young Life, recently learned to drive a clutch and has won an academic scholarship that he hopes to use at UNC Chapel Hill. I still think of Buckroe as home, though I rarely have time to visit. I was amazed to see that the Buckroe Fishing Pier had washed away in the last big storm and glad to see they have rebuilt it. I especially miss not being able to go to Nick's Seafood Pavilion in Yorktown since it too was washed away by that same storm. I work as an analyst, technical writer and compliance consultant for pharmaceutical manufacturers. I learned years ago that consultants never retire, they just bill fewer hours, but soon I'll have four sons in college, so I'll be billing as many hours as I can until they're through. I do enjoy traveling and I get to take the family when they are on school breaks. I worked in Sweden five years ago and travel to Puerto Rico frequently. Can't say I missed the snow and ice in the Valley over the winters since I flew home on weekends (though I am paying for it this winter while working in Toronto), but I can highly recommend the sunrises, the sound of the surf and the smell of the ocean from my balcony in San Juan. I do wish Jim Cooley and I had not had quite so much fun in Spanish class at Kecoughtan. My vocabulary and verbal skills, or rather the lack of them, seem to me to get me in as much trouble there now as they did in class back then. I'm looking forward to attending the reunion, and hope to see lots of familiar faces. Richard
