Richard's Story
Life
Richard G. Smith graduated from Ohio Univ, summa cum laude in '66 with a BS in Ed. Member of Phi Beta Kappa and other honoraries. He earned his masters degree in chem from Indiana Univ in '70, and has done additional grad work in chem at Ohio State Univ. Taught chem at Lancaster HS for 3 yrs, and at Ohio Univ - Lancaster campus for 2 yrs. Taught chem at Bexley High School for 32 yrs. Smith is listed in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He has received one of the 10 regional outstanding teaching awards, presented by the American Chemical Society (1978). Ohio Univ in May, '95 presented him with their outstanding teaching award among OU alumni. He is married to his wife of 35 yrs, Donna Squire Smith, a 68 OU graduate. They have 2 sons, Eric, age 28 and Mark, 25. Eric is a profesional firefighter/paramedic (married with one daughter) and Mark is a PhD student at Univ of Chicago (intern'l relations). i textbooks for Glencoe Publishing, a division of McGraw-Hill. 2 of these texts have '98 copyrights, and 1 has been published in Italian and Spanish. In '89, Glencoe Publishing Co. named him outstanding secondary school author. He has presented science teacher training seminars in Thailand, Japan, Korea, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and throughout the United States. He is active as an author/consultant with educational video, CD-ROM, and computer software development companies. He presently works for McGraw-Hill as a part time national science consultant doing professional development workshops for teachers. He is a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church in Shallotte, NC. He is a deacon, and youth group leader. Smith is a retired volunteer firefighter/EMT of the Bloom Twp Fire Dept. He is a private pilot-1969 and amateur radio operator, WA8VCV. Since retiring in June 2001 to Ocean Isle Beach, NC he has become active in boating and the US Power Squadron and is a Lt/C in the local squadron.
