Richard's Story
How about I put what I remember...lol
After graduation I went to FJC and worked at Lewis Business Forms until I got drafted by the Army.
Didn't want to be in the Army so I got the Marines to give me a deal on electronics training...guaranteed. Wouldn't have done that but the Army wouldn't negotiate. Said they didn't have to, they had me already.
Traveled the world during my 7 years in the USMC
School for a year in Millington Tennessee
Stationed in Cherry Point NC for a couple of years working on electronics systems for A-4 Aircraft.
From there went to Iwakuni Japan to join the famed squadron VMA-211 of Pappy Boyington and the Black sheep of Wake Island Fame in WWII.
From there went to Bein Hoa Viet Nam. Went twice. Left there the day after the cease fire was announced in Paris. Damn I was glad to get out because it was getting really hairy up...Expand for more
until the last minute. Only 500 Marines
surrounded by 5000 NVA just waiting on the results of the Paris Peace accords. We dropped out bombs and the fired their rockets up until the last moment. We were lucky, we only lost one Marine during out tour. But lots of close calls. But I guess that's war. It sucked then and still does!!!
From there went to Subic Bay in the Philippines. From there went to Naha Okinawa. While there did a visit to
Taipei Taiwan.
Back to Japan did a lot of sight seeing. Hiroshima, Toyko, just to name a few cities.
Then back to the states and Jax Florida at NAS to work with the reserves.
The Marines did a reduction in force after the war was over and I got let go for disabilities. Dec 31 1975
I will write more later. I have been lucky enough to live a very colorful life. If anyone is interested I will write more.
