Richard's Story
This is a story about love, military, betrayal, children, prison, and recovery. After high school, like most CHS’ers, I went to De Anza to get my general studies out of the way for cheap. Earned my Associate’s in Computer Information Systems, then joined the U.S. Navy. I didn’t enjoy my time in Great Lakes, Illinois (a California boy surrounded by 5-feet of snow?!), then came back to the Bay Area and married the absolute wrong woman. We have two wonderful boys, but our marriage was loveless. After filing for divorce, I suddenly got calls from Child Protective Services (CPS) and the San Jose Police, accusing me of physically harming my sons. These accusations were proven to be unfounded, yet my visitation rights were revoked, and I fell into a pit of depression because my ex-wife used the system to gain full custody of my sons. Two years later, while living in Bangor, Maine (thre...Expand for more
e blocks away from Stephen King’s house), I was suddenly interviewed by the police about reports of child abuse in California, even though I hadn’t had any contact with my sons in all that time. Three interviews later I was arrested, extradited to San Jose, and went through three jury trials: losing the second trial, winning my appeal, then losing my third trial. I spent fourteen years in prison for a crime which NEVER occurred, but used that time wisely, religiously and creatively: wrote several novels, two self-help books, and invented several card and board games. I've continued to remain upbeat and outgoing. My life has had its ups and downs, but my future is so very positive right now! I only recently got out of prison, but everything is going smoothly. In the words of Dr. Everett Brown (“Back to the Future”): “Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one!”
