Richard's Story

Hello Life Survivors and Congratulations!! Reality Show; Cody! Cast: "Us!" Time: "Ours" Star and Commentator: "You." Let's begin. Take a walk with me back to 1965, 64, 63; I'll begin here.... Played in all of Cody High bands, but the best and my favorite was the "Stage/Jazz Band" ...remember our theme song; Peter Gunn. Curtain going up, during assemblies or concerts, everyone screaming. Exciting to be a part of that back then. I cherished it. Had my own working band on weekends plus played in a few other rock bands around Dearborn Hieghts/Telegraph. Worked at my Dad's music Store in Dearborn Hieghts on Warren Ave. My Dad was on WXYZ T.V. -a musician and comedy actor on the Soupy Sales, nite show, plus had his own Club Polka T.V. show in the Fifties. (our parents time) Stan Wisniach (Wiz'nee ak) After Graduation; a yr at Henry Ford Jr College, was drafted and joined the Navy; as a musician. After 6 months at the Navy School of Music (met a lot of very talented and heavy guys there, who played with Stan Kenton and Mel Torme already...unreal talents) we (7 of us better musicians) formed our own "Rock-Soul-Jazz Show Band," (aside from the Navy Touring Band)...while traveling Europe for a year; great fun, they treated us like the Beatles or something. We were very good, made the newspapers; we were so popular that the Navy gave us civilian clothes, and we received numerous citations and awards for "promoting good will and being positive ambassadors" for our country during the negative political climate of the Viet Nam era; 67-68 Europeon/Med tour. (our own 7 pc rock-show band) Pretty fun experience and times for a 19 year old out of Detroit. Opportunity to see, 15-18 different cities in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Malta etc..3-4 tour cycles to each country over that year tour. That was exciting, fun, creative & memorable...at 19- 20 years old. Nice! Settled in Southern California to get into the studio's/studio musician was the goal. Did some recording, played for Bobby Vinton, lived on the ocean my first year, life was great! During and after college I had my own working band again on the weekends;while working Corp. positions as Regional Sales Mgr. for Western U.S. in commercial Juice Extracting equip and Chiquita Tropical Products. Owned several of my own Wienerschnitzel Franchises in my late twenties= yeah, go ahead say it..."Wienny man." lol. Married, divorced, single now; two kids raised. Live on a Lake in a Bedroom Community about 10 miles from the Ocean near Laguna Beach-Dana Point,San Clemente area. Miss Michigan especially the autumn and Franklin Cider Mills, leaves turning; most romantic time and memories for me. I try and visit my nieghborhood friends/buddies in the Fall to experience that piece of my heart. Passion; I love writing songs. This weekend my son goes into a recording studio on drums, (he's 17)... and it's my favorite place in the world to be; my son, music and recording. I played all the saxes, clar, flute, and just bang around on piano for arranging and writing; that's my love. I also love photography a lot. Had offers to work at Capital Records on the business side in my twenties and blew that one, cause I wanted to stay in college. Then was in line to be a road mgr. for the Carpenter's in the early seventies, but didn't get it; my brush with some nice stuff around the music bus...in my early twenties-- Oh vell!! Took a different road; a dirt road vs. an expedient freeway-...Expand for more
-a conversation for another time perhaps; passion vs. practicality. Sigh! Wow, this got long! I'm a talker and rather long winded; blame it on the sax playing all those years. lol Who reads this stuff anyway? Oh, you. Thank you. Curious, remember me? Tall slender guy, dark hair, open, loves romantic picnics and walks on the beach.....opps! ...not the dating site? oh-oh. lol At Cody, my whole life was the Bands, working, playing/gigging, some very fun times to be sure; anything around music. Our great and wonderful Band Director, Larry Teal, was one of the most positive influences on me as a great leader, model, awesome pro musician also; not just a teacher. I called him 10 years after graduation and thanked him for that; he was touched that any of his students would remember him after that time and take the time to contact him; it was my pleasure as he made my high school experience a truly great and heart touching one. He knew how to get the best out of young, upcoming talent. I was a late bloomer and had my adventures while touring Europe and living on the beach in Virginia Beach and San Diego at 19 and 23. Awesome experience for me; living right on the beach, in the sand, views of the ocean. Thank you God for those blessings. What? No snow? ..never below 40? I love and need to be by the water. Love visiting my friends in Dearborn Hieghts and up in No. Mich. Bellaire,--lake. Beautiful; my heart. The romantic side coming out I guess. Love nature. Often times wished I would have stayed in Michigan and married someone from there; more layers of commonality, beauty, culture, heritage etc.. You know what I mean. Yeah, I know it's very cold. It's very hot and smoggy out here in the summer; oh, I'm sorry, it's 7 degrees out and snowing back there in Mich. right now? Opps! (Dec. 09 right now) ...71 here. Sorry. lol Anyway....this is turning into a mini-series-novel here.Blah, blah, blah & a yada! In closing, I'm so glad I/we grew up in the 50's and early 60's, now that we have the perspective of our age and current times. I lived on Woodmont off of Warren Ave., between Southfield (down from Carpenters Hall) and Greenfield, six house off of Ford's Woods and fields; or what use to be. Anyone out there "live on a lake?" Love to see photo's of that. I should put some photo's on here. Funny how like Salmon we have a curiosity or need to come back and visit/touch with "this time" of our lives; our teens/high school. I've attended 3 different colleges out in So.Cal, after a year at Henry Ford JR. College, and we don't seem to get together with those people; of course out here everyone is so spread out and went different ways for the most part. That's about it. Geeeez, that's about enough, don't you think. ha! Good luck and God bless you. oh! If you remember the Cody Stage Band at all from our assemblies, concerts etc., I was the tall,6'4", skinny guy with dark hair. Yeah, as if we'd remember that out of what...? 5000 students in that school. Those were mostly pretty good times weren't they. Great part of our formative lives transistioning from childhood to adults. Watch out!! Baby Boomers wave hitting retirement...here we come!!!! Let's have a "sock hop!" Nyaaaa, too much liability with "slip and falls." Walk carefully everyone, but dance like there's no tomorrow! Cody-1965; thank you to all that were my friends or aquaintances and shared that unique time of our lives together. Awesome! Richard__
